The swallows are interesting, captured in action like that. Given the perch, it looks like it would be near an urban area. A farm house in the middle of Derbyshire countryside , the swallows was on and off the cable from the telegraph poles

The tiger says "I'm waiting, no hurry", while the big lion's eyes say "I'm analyzing you and your posture, and will decide how to approach you for eventual consumption." I love cats of all sizes but must admit that big Lion was intimidating , not just his size but that look ,even using a 500mm lens at quite a distance he was looking right at me .

Beautiful Leo....... stunning photography, better than the naked eye. Do you edit all the exif details? I was looking to see what settings you had the camera on but there was no info...... I suppose that's something you professionals do?
Mike.

I suppose that's something you professionals do? Mike. I'm no pro mate just a hobbyist I'm not sure why the EXIF details don't show up, I use DXO optics for converting the camera RAW files to DNG for Lightroom , I'll crop and add watermark and export to JPG or PNG maybe it gets lost during conversion . TBH I'm shite at the post process stuff so try to get the exposure etc right with the camera , I'm no good at faffing about with altering stuff . If theres any exif you need just let me know, the cameras RAW files should still have them

Thanks nando, I'm hoping maybe I'm improving with practice I'm getting more used to the manual settings now , instead of auto I wanted to get straight into manual so theres more control . I'll sometimes use auto ISO for fast moving things like birds but prefer to set the aperture ,shutter speed manually

Leo, My pheasants not only peck at the nut feeder, one of them is so clever he jumps up and knocks it off the feeding pole to empty the nuts onto the ground! He's a little (not so little) bastard! I was over at Caithness livestock breeders last week and asked the owner if he had anything for pheasants (I want to detract them from the small bird feeders) and he said "oh yes..... follow me"........ 20KG of "Poultry corn" for £6.50..... they absolutely LOVE it so I am gradually going to move them away from the small bird feeding station to the bottom of the garden..... they're just running riot at the moment! £6.50 for 20KG of poultry feed is sustainable but £20 for 20KG of bird seed is NOT, if the pheasants are eating all of it! This type of thing would work: www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1-x-30-00kg-Pheasant-game-Chicken-poultry-Hanging-feeder-14-99-delivered-/372138483830I am also thinking along the lines of 2 metres of plastic guttering with a wooden stand..... a kind of feeding trough for the pheasants..... I'd need two metres because they are quite bitchy with each other and there is many a fight over seed.... a two metre trough would ensure they all get space to peck. I've got so much "pheasentry" going down outside Leo but can never get the buggers to stay still so how the hell do you get such perfect photos? Burst mode? Maybe 100 snaps with only one being a good one? I've just taken ownership of a Panasonic Lumix G2 (old I know) for £125 so looking forward to trying it out...... it's in MINT condition and has more features on it than the Star Ship Enterprise....... I've got a couple of automatic extension tube rings on their way for it because I aim to use it mainly for Macro duty... do you think they will be OK / do the job? www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Automatic-Macro-Extension-Tube-Ring-for-Olympus-Panasonic-four-thirds-Micro-M-SS/232501273557?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649 My only concern is the lens may "hunt" with the tube extensions but I can't afford a dedicated Macro lens at the moment so thought these may be an el cheapo way of going about it or have I got this totally wrong? All the best mate, Mike.

There are several ways of snatching a fast object. The shutterspeed should be high. Is can be done by new camera’s with good high iso quality or with descent glass with big apertures. Even an old dslr can take great photo’s with some very good glass in front of it.
It also helps if you know what you subject will be doing next. You kinda know you birds so be ready with the camera. Patients helps too.

All the best mate, Mike. I thought that thing was a powder keg at first and you was going to blast them :-D good idea though regarding the poultry corn, should be more than enough to keep the greedy little shits filled. We have the same problem with wood pigeons , they eat all the food I put out for the smaller birds so I have to buy large bags of cheap seed to satisfy them. They'll eat and eat until they are about to burst. For fast action I use 1/800 -1/1600 shutter speed for larger birds and 1/2500-1/3200 for smaller birds. My camera can do 10fps in RAW and keep going without running out of buffer until 200 shots but its rare I do anywhere near that many, usually a quick burst of 3 is enough for flying birds. I sometimes get a bird half out the frame but you get used to fast moving objects with practice . You need good light with these fast shutter speeds so fast glass really helps, I mainly use f2.8 and f4 prime lenses although slower zooms is fine if you have good lighting . I've not used a Lumix G2 but I do like Panasonics sensors , their really nice . £125 is a fantastic price for a camera of that calibre . Extension rings are a good way to start and much cheaper than a dedicated macro lens, you do loose more light though and with the small apertures needed for macro it'll take practice . Focusing is likely to be very slow so you may want to try manual focus. I love macro and its something I'm very interested in although it is quite fiddly and requires a lot of patience . The downside with macro is that you need to stop down the aperture down because of the tiny depth of field . What sort of macro do you like ? bugs , flowers or general small objects ?

I generally don't take photos of insects, I tend to stand on them or whack them with a suitable implement (especially WASPS!!!) I know it's not eco "friendly" but neither is being stung by a wasp Mike.

My "carbon footprint" is VERY large if I get a wasp sting..... I dance about like a Morris Dancer on Acid and can do a hundred metre dash faster than Linford..... seriously, they really DO get me running like a girlie

Macro for capacitors / opamps etc. Leo........ not bugs Be no problem for components etc , its worth experimenting with lighting if theres not enough natural light. The standard camera flash tends to reflect blowing out highlights on smooth surfaces , I'd try a diffuser like tracing paper over the flash
