Hello, I wonder which amplifier has the more natural sound. I found the middles and the highs very similar in both amps (maybe the X-CANS is a little warmer) but the X-CANS has a far more powerful bass. I don't know if is the X-CANS that colours the sound or if is the OPPO that don't have the power to show it all. They're driving the HD600. Either way, i prefer the sound of the X-CANS. Thank you!

The headphone amplifier (if fitted) in to most media players is usually added more as an afterthought, and not anything out of the box, as it would place too high a varying current demand on the PSU area of the player itself, which isn't desirable, as well as needing higher voltage supply rails. X-CANS will almost certainly be adding some colouration , but that's the reason most people with valve headphone amplifiers like them , isn't it ? The higher even order harmonic distortion of most valve HA designs imparts a little additional "warmth" to the sound.

The good news (I think) is that valve amps nearly always require AC current, and so they nearly always have extra output power for dynamics etc.

Before the oppo i was using a denon dcd-655 cd player and it has also its own headphone amp, but that one warms the sound a lot more than the x-cans - a lot. It was powerful but produced a very unnatural sound.
