...capacitor! Mrs cj's PC started playing up, PSU problems. Opened up the PSU and found 2 leaking main caps, 470uf 200v of small physical dimensions. The maximum dimensions allowable would D22mm x H40mm. Can't get them locally and the big boys require full postage charge on top which, in total, comes to the same price of a brand new PSU! Instead of doing a simple repair I'll be buying an entire new PSU tomorrow. Obviously I can keep the old one and pop the needed caps on my next order for a later repair and keep it as a spare or another project. Still total madness though

Many thanks for offer Mike but 22mm really is the maximum diameter. I picked up the new PSU this morning for the princely sum of €15!
Cheers.

It simply isn't worth the trouble repairing an old PC PSU when you can buy another one so cheaply. The fan is also likely to have worn bearings and a limited further lifetime too, and in the meantime, PC PSUs appear to have improved specifications.

Quite sad that it has come to this and a great example how going "green" is code red for global disaster. Mike.

It also shows just how much we are being ripped off by component distribution chains when they can afford to take all the components, assemble them on PCBs etc. include a fan, assemble them in a metal case, sell them to the trade, and both manufacturer and the distribution side, (wholesale and retail) still make healthy profits.

This is exactly what I was getting at in my opening post.
