I now have a sennheiser hd598. i cant choose to go with new 650s or stick with the 598's. I've got the power to drive the 650's tough.
Any opinions on them ?

The HD650's have an exaggerated response for people who felt the HD600's lacked something. I had the 600's & the 650's for quite a while and grew tired of what seemed to be an unextended top end and a coloured bass in the 650's. I believe the 598's have a more neutral response (rather like the 600's) which for me is what it's all about. These days I must say I am much happier with AKG702's

I decided to break the bank and just buy em. IMO they are more precise then the 598's and the bass is way less coloured. the soundstage on the 598's seems larger to me.

My apologies I got my numbers mixed up. I was thinking of the HD580 which are more like the HD600. I can see that the HD598 are a different and newer model altogether. I don't like most of the Senns I hear these days, they seem awfully coloured so it's quite possible that the HD650's sound less coloured than the 598's. I'm afraid that for me the 650's sounded way too bloated by comparison to the HD600 and neither of them are as neutral as the AKG's.

You just can't beat a pair of HD-600 / HD-650 for all round "Jack of all trades" duty....... you can't go wrong.

Now that i have listened to the 650 for a couple days i can't go back to the 598 anymore. They are just way too coloured for me now. the dynamic is nowere close to the 650.
Best money i spent in a while. And it goes really well with my modded bravo v1

These days I must say I am much happier with AKG702's Hi Chris, I have both the Senn 650 and the AKG702 and would totally agree with your evaluation. The Senns sound OK with rock but I don't think they handle light acoustic stuff at all well. They just flatten the whole presentation and turn sunny music into a dull overcast day with the cloying bass that they add. I love the very neutral AKG 702 which is just so clear and precise. Funnily enough I also own the Denon AH D2000 which I feel has a deeper bass response than the Senn 650. However it also has a good top end and I don't find that it muffles acoustic stuff like I think the Senn does. In fact, these days I am having trouble deciding if I prefer the AKG or the Denon. That is not something I expected would be the case because, like you, I do love neutral. One area where the Denons do beat the AKG is when watching a movie. That deep bass really comes into it's own then and they sound fantastic. Who needs neutral for the average LFE film fodder ? And you can't always have the windows rattling from the subs !
