My old faithful HD560ovii's may be on the way out Apart from needing another set of pads and an unobtainium headband, they also suffer from their inbuilt fault of dodgey lead connections to the cups which is now getting silly. I could hardwire the leads or maybe even change to 3.5mm and buy said pads but until I go in for the kill I'm not sure how possible that is. These are my comfy headphones, the ones that spend the most time on my head. Why do I like them so much? 1) they are extemely comfortable, have very soft velour pads that accommadate spectacle arms with no problem at all. Meaning I can read and/or compute with them on. 2) sound quality wise I think they are very underated, plenty of detail and "enough" of everything else without any extremes (there is a treble tizz that I got around by using a Cardas lead). 3) I can wear them indefinitely. Although quite different beasts, on balance, with all of the above taken into account, I even prefer them to the HD600s! So, what would fulfil the above niche?

AKG K712 should be similar. The Shure SRH 1440 also. The Shure SRH 1840 is nice, but is a little shy in the lower treble/presence area.

Hi Dale,
I thought you may be the first to reply.
I've heard a friends K712, couldn't decide if I prefered it the the 701 (mine) or not. The 712 seems to have a bit more bass presence than the 701 but there also seems to be a shift in the overall balance with the 712 losing that magnificent mid range of the 701, if I was forced to choose i would keep the 701 driven by the tasty Aclass amp, the 712s are more forgiving of amp. However, both are VERY different to 560ovii. The 701 is super analytical, the 712 less so. The 560s are the headphone-ication of a jack-of-all-trades, master-of-none, a great all rounder and very balanced that is beaten by other cans in certain areas only. The 712 also fails on comfort, only marginally better than the 701 in this respect when compared to the 560ovii.
Thanks for the thought but hopefully the above gives more of an outline of my needs. I'm completely unfamiliar with the Shures so would have to see if i can hunt down a listen.
Cheers.

Nothing remotely like the HD560 ovation Adrian and nowhere close to them with regard to SQ. Best regards. Mike.

I got to borrow some Philips Fidelio X2 for a couple of days. A very strong contender, they share many of the 560's strengths and add a little more bass. There did seem to be a little peak in the treble area, the sort of domain where higher pitched female voices sound a tad exaggerated. A very cosy wear and as light as the 560's too.
I'd love to hear the massdrop AKG K7XX, which is getting some good press but I guess little hope of that without buying.
@fps
The 580's are pretty much the same as the 600's.

I dug out my AKG K280's today for use at work now that the 560's have become a PITA to use and give me a chance to take them home for some hopeful modding. These really are better than I remember, their tonal balance is a little brighter than the 560's but on the whole pretty decent. I think maybe some thin foam discs may help the topiness a bit. They were an interesting design, "Parabolic" (pair-a-bollox, da-dogs-bollox?) that AFAIK was unique to AKG; With twin angled drivers in each earpiece and twin perpendicular (and also angled) ports. Mine have some replacement velor pads that give my ears some more room, the original and rather aged/flattenend leatherette ones allowed my lugs to touch the inner plastic frame of the cup. However, they are not as comfortable as the 560's

An old thread now I realise cj but did you find yourself a replacement you were happy with? I ask because I've got a pair of HD565 Ovations (not 560's so I'm not sure what- or how big- the differences are between the 560's and 565's) which are sitting here gathering dust if anybody is interested. They need a new cable, earpads and headband padding but otherwise are all good if anybody is interested. They were my first serious pair of headphones purchased back in 1999!
EDIT: Ok, having just looked at some pictures I see the 560's are very different beasts to the 565's, at least in appearance. D'oh!

Paul The Sennheiser HD565 was one of my favorites, along with the Grado SR325, circa 1999-2000. The HD580 was too distant, and the HD600 for some reason still not forward enough (for my listening at that time).

Dale, from your and other reviews I was thinking of taking a chance on the Philips Fidelio X2.

Dale, from your and other reviews I was thinking of taking a chance on the Philips Fidelio X2. Not a bad choice at all. Certainly a little darker than the HD600, and maybe even the HD650, but still very hi-fi and smooth, and great prices. I got mine from Massdrop for $200 USD.
