I've been using a Pentax K100D Super since 2007/8 and it's been a great camera. I think I've said before that I went with Pentax because all my old lenses from my 35mm film days are totally compatible with Pentax DSLRs. Here it is with a 42mm screw-thread Helios for example. Screw threads obviously need an adaptor, but all Pentax K fit bayonets, from any era, just slot right in. I always said I'd not upgrade from my 6 megapixel K100D until I could afford a Pentax with 24 megapixels; that way I'd be able to crop tighter and still have sufficient resolution for A4 prints (lens quality permitting, naturally). Well my new camera will be 20MP, which is close enough to 24, and I've gone for the quirky-looking KS-1. Although it's available in many colours I managed to find a black one, body only, at a very good price on Amazon UK. And since I ordered mine just a couple of hours ago the price has gone up a hundred quid :-) www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00N3XBBLS?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00Delivery is due by 1:00pm tomorrow so fingers crossed it'll arrive by then as I have to go out. Ooooh! let me know how you get on with it Derek..... the Macro function on my Nikon is nowhere near as good as it used to be and it doesn't like going in really close these days so I think it's time for a new camera myself. I have always liked Pentax cameras and will be interested to see how yours copes with macro shots.
All the best,
Mike.

I dont have any true macro lenses but I am looking forward to taking some closeups. The new camera body has an auto focus adjust feature and you can save individual settings for a number of lenses. That may help keep closeups in focus. Also it has a true pentaprism viewing system (whereas my current body uses mirrors) which'll give a brighter focussing screen image meaning it's better for manual focussing. All that should contribute to sharper images.. if my eyesight and technique is up to it. I will try it out first on the 'wild corner' in my garden. This year sees a brilliant display of foxgloves, some over 7' tall. If I hadn't already owned a collection of Pentax-fit lenses I would have def. gone with Nikon. Niko have produced wonderful lenses. Wonder what the issue with yours is? All the photos you publish on here look good? D.

Hi dalethorn, yes, the old K100D is comfortable. You know, reading reviews of the new K-S1 reviewers say it's NOT comfortable and the finger grip is too small; it is and it's not. They say the control knob is too stiff; it isn't. They say the 'cursor' buttons on the control wheel are too small; they're not.
Viewfinder is much brighter than on the old K100D and it has a better focussing screen too. I learned all the necessary controls quickly; wasn't too much of a shock.
I'm uploading some early shots to my Photobucket account right now.

These are big JPGS so sorry about that. I took the photos in RAW (.dng) format with conversion to highest quality JPG using Adobe Camera Raw's default conversion with no sharpening, no noise reduction, no increased saturation. In the wide shot I did use a little highlight recovery to pull back some hot spots in the white clouds. In the close-up I realise the highlights are shot; it's the backlighting. All three photos were taken with Pentax's standard (cheap) 18-55mm kit lens with shake reduction 'on'. It isn't the sharpest tool in my box but the results are encouraging nevertheless. Anyway, my wild flower corner: 1/320s @ f8.0, 28mm, handheld 1/125s @ f10, 55mm, handheld 1/250s @ f9.0, handheld

Now that I have 2 DSLRS by Pentax, until I Ebay the old one, I spent a few moments comparing their respective 6 MP & 20 MP image qualities. I used the same lens, same exposure etc and took a number of shots with the camera bodies sat on a window sill (window open) with mirrors locked up, 2s delay and no shake reduction. Exposure was 1/1000s, f5.6, 400 asa, sorry.. ISO. I selected the best shot from each batch. I upsampled the 6MP image to the same resolution as the 20MP capture and put them side by side on my Photoshop screen. This is what 20MP gives you over 6MP, plus it's a more modern sensor design. The newer 20mp Pentax does without an antialiasing filter too: Hope you can tell which is which. derek p.s. no sharpening, noise reduction etc etc. Just the necessary reformating to jpeg highest quality for upload to Photobucket.

Spot on! Yes I have not been dissatisfied with the 'old' 6MP K100D. But time, now, to let it go. That new Pentax (by Sony) sensor is a stunner.

Pentax K-S1 body with SMC Pentax-M f1.7/50mm lens. Hand held 1/320s at f8.0. Shake reduction 'on'. Cloudy today, and cold even for a British July day. I am putting off my chores and am well into displacement activities. Took a photo out of one of the back bedroom windows (window open). The .DNG file was processed in Photoshop Elements 6.0 via Adobe Camera Raw. Tonal and colour balance courtesy of the Kodachrome 25 setting in Alien Skin 2 plugin. Although I've tweaked the shape of the highlight end of that setting's characteristic curve to preserve detail in the brighter areas of the clouds. Then a bit of burning and dodging here and there; just like in the old days. No sharpening added though a little would have done no harm. OK, I'm away to clean the shower now... honest. Derek
