That's for sure, all the English are living abroad! Left Musland to the immigrants...

The front panel has arrived in the UK so it should be here any day now so I'll manage to get the amp completed at last I'm just going to stick with the ALPS RK27 (Blue Velvet) pot as it kinda slots into the enclosure nice and neat...... if I were to fit the stepped attenuator it would mean losing the alu shield between the PSU and amp and I'd rather keep that thanks. The pot will have to be wired onto the PCB so I've gone with some solid silver stranded PTFE coated wire. I got a 50 metre roll of this gear many years ago and it's bastard good stuff! You can hold a solder iron tip on the wire all day long and it won't melt, shrink or burn and the pure silver strands (99.999% IIRC) should be nice in the signal path I nearly CHOKED when I saw that some joints are charging UPWARD of £15 per metre PLUS VAT PLUS P&P for similar pure silver wire.... what a damned rip off! That would make my 50 metre roll (well, there's about 45 metres left) worth 45 x £15 = £675 + 20% VAT = £810 ?? Fekk off! somebody is really taking the pish here and they call themselves the "hi-fi collective". Yeh, they're collecting, no doubt about that..... collecting money by the metre! Anyhoo....... another time, another channel regarding "boutique" wires. My RK27, all ready to go:

All seems to work with no hum etc ... I used back emf diodes across the relay coils as this stops any clicks being heard with the headphones on.
Going to redo the earth cable on the phono sockets, as not happy with that blob of solder (must of been getting late when I done that)
Now the mods can start ..... and a general tidy up etc

Hi Nick, There's a hell of a lot going on there I like the enclosure and the general "build" is superb. My build is a lot more minimalist, all I want it to be is a headphone amp...... one input, one output.... a dedicated headphone amp. There could never have been a competition as we are both doing different things...... yours is going to be an all singing / all dancing JLH Chiara and mine is a dedicated headphone amp only. 1 x source input and 1 x headphone socket output....... Keep it simple. The replacement front panel arrived today and it's pristine so I'll probably hook it all up this weekend. Did you manage to send those screw terminals Nick? If not, it's not a biggie, I'll just hard wire direct to the board. What's with the cat thing? Do you own a pet food company or a pet shop? All the best, Mike.

Nick, One thing I homed in on instantly was the pot connections going through a screw down terminal block..... those cables should be hard wired direct to the pads..... those terminals are "OK" for PSU hook up duty (at a push) but a big no no for signal path duty...... YMMV...... Same goes for the headphone output mate....... mains cable out of a terminal block is going to strangle the sound and that "joint" will soon start oxidising.... you are far better hard wiring direct to the pads.

Hi Mike
I have the terminals for you, all in a little bag ready to be posted .. I will try this week for you (promise)
regarding the cat .. I wanted a logo for my builds, so had the cat scanned so it could be laser engraved onto the front panel .. then just made a name up jamesfeline (as I like big cats & james is my surname) so with my name and logo it sort of stuck that way .. plus I started to get good feedback from people so I stuck with it.
Also for my next build I think I will complete a one input output like you have done .. for me I feel the competition stress got the better of me and now I feel I rushed it abit and totally happy with my construction as I feel in some areas I could have done better ..
regards
Nick

I am going to rework a few areas The pot is going to be changed, and some of the cabling removed and changed and better routing etc and the terminals removed and soldered .... damn it .. see what happens when you rush a build

Ok ALL
On reflection I am not happy with my efforts on this example ... so going to strip down and start again in some of the areas
The new version will be one input (link through) and one output for headphones .. like mike is doing
So gents .. watch this space ... "this will be the one"
Great site with some good old DIY activities

"this will be the one" Great site with some good old DIY activities Hey Nick, Your build is FAR superior to mine and you obviously "need" all those relays etc. in your particular application? All I require is an input and output, the rest would be simply buttons I would never press. Man, don't get down, it's all good The only areas that need tidied up are those screw down PCB mount terminal blocks, they are totally impeding the flow in the signal path. Why utilise screened cable and then terminate it in a board mounted screw down terminal block? Just seems a bit pointless to me. I've always been a Dog man myself, cats just don't do it for me..... they're either wandering about with dead vermin in their mouth or sitting on your lap digging their claws into your flesh....... not my idea of a pet........ each to their own tho'............ Mike.

Hi Mike , Well if you have seen how a big cat in the wild goes from lazing in the sun without a care in the world to totally focused and locked onto what has caught their interest, usually food, you have to respect them. Always makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up. The local pet moggy does it too when they see the next mouse lunch But there speaks a cat man. BTW you just piped me to James's Chiaria on fleebay by a few hours grrr Martin

Hey Nick, Hope all is good your end mate........ no need to send those terminal blocks for the PSU to amp hook up as I have decided to hard wire them too........ Sure, they make things easy but I have always been an advocate of the "hard wire" school I'll get this finished on Saturday, I've got fekk all to do on Saturday and will get this hooked up and good to go within an hour (or two) I am going in "hard wired" all the way with red PTFE silver strand wire and red cabling throughout....... I feel a lot more comfortable with my belt and braces hard wired PSU to amp connection: Belt and braces....... solid silver (.999) strands hardwired direct to the pads and secured with a cable tie holder..... that connection is going nowhere apart from staying where it is. A short path over to the amp board: The potentiometer (RK27 ALPS) path to the board will be made via PTFE coated 99.999% solid silver stranded wire.... very tightly twisted in the "pink" style and is 700% better than using mains cable (99 out of 100 cats agree) The pics of the "working" amp will be uploaded this weekend....... it's gonna be well worth tuning in for Mike.
