I like the visual effect of LEDs on PSU boards, it's a very gratifying thumbs up when you switch on, assuming you don't get a rocket-cap between the eyes! I can also confirm Alex's statement above having done the same on both the Jaycar and the Class A.

Hi Nick Many of us use similar to what's in the GB thread at the link, or the original Silicon Chip version of this PCB with adjust resistor values amended for just over + and -20V Out before the JLH PCBs which have a couple of 100mV drop through their current limiters. Very nice build Nick given me some food for thought.
Just out of interest I have emailed Audio-GD to get details of their Sun opa for a Chiara. Will post when I get a reply.
Still getting around to rebuilding or a new build of my Chiara but this may spur me on.
All the best Martin

Hi Adrian,
We'll have just got a very quick reply from Audio-GD, and I quote;
"Sorry, all our OPAs have been discontinued"
So I guess that's it .......... Ah well have to stick with the Moon

I have some original Suns (with LEDs, two I converted to normal diodes one is standard) at home doing nothing. I'll need to test them as one of them went tits up. Do you want one?

Me too if you have them. I remember the Moon was a direct plug in by the Sun needed some modification - I can't remember exactly what though.

OK, found the two working ones, I must have turfed the third duffer. I'm afraid I'm only willing to let one go so Martin has dibs, sorry Adrian. Do you want the LED version or the one converted to diodes?

I hope you two don't get confused with pins in the love doll and a nasty roll in the hay with the Queen of New Orleans!

Don't forget these OPAs are rated for up to +\- 25vdc so are good candidates for higher voltage rails!

As is the more modern LME49860 44V Dual High Performance, High Fidelity Audio Operational Amplifier which has superior specifications (less colouration) and will work up to + and -22V rails as well as being a direct replacement in this circuit.

Thought I'd ask in the Chiara thread on what appears to be THE Chiara forum: John Linsley Hood had an article in Gramophone magazine in October 1992 called "The How and Why of DIY Part 3 - A Simple Class-A Headphone Amplifier". I tracked down a copy of the article in a university library some time ago but it was just one page and had only a basic description and simplified schematic of an opamp driving a single-ended transistor buffer. You had to write to Gramophone to get the full article and schematic.
Does anyone know if the Chiara is that amplifier?

Hello. I'm a newcomer to this forum, having just bought a Chiara on eBay. I haven't delved inside yet, although I have read up as much as I can about it. I have a problem and wonder whether anyone can help? It is perfectly silent with nothing connected to the input, but as soon as I connect anything to either input channel or both, I get a gentle crackling on both channels equally, which is partially volume control related, but not entirely - it's there with volume at zero, and only a bit louder at full volume. Any source is exactly the same. I'm using 300 ohm Sennheiser Hd540, for what it's worth. I've tried all the 9 pin outputs from the Andante psu, they're all the same. Any ideas? Does it sound like an earthing problem? The sound is just the same as when my Quad ESL57s had a minor HT breakdown! Thanks very much. Mark
