Magnifico! He had a tenor's power with a good depth in the baritone range, as well. Sounds like me in the shower...especially the laugh...which is my fav. Grew up with DiStefano playing on LP's...Abruzzi/Napolitano we are...except for my Norwegian papa. Cool demeanor, blazing heart!
Very thankful for the link to that, Dale
BTW...My mom was a mezzo-soprano and sang with the NBC Radio Orchestra with Toscanini as her conductor. We had 78rpm recordings of her in the chorus and few solos. Marvelous voice she had...used to sing duets with a coloratura soprano friend of hers. The house was filled with soprano harmonies. Those old 78's would break into pieces if dropped on wood floor...careful with those..
I'd be interested to hear your take on Boccelli's voice and compare its to Caruso's...side by side. Surprised me.

There is a cd titled "Hit Men" The Greatest Voices of Our Time...on the EMI label. A 2 disk set it features the voices of Domingo, DiStefano, Bjorling, Gedda, Pavoratti, Franco Corelli, Carreras, Merrill, Milnes, Tucker et al. To be taken in over a period of time...at one sitting it can be a bit much....but then, if you crave Italian tenors..go for it!

Thanks for that info. I did a simple youtube search for Vesti la Giubba, and played many of the videos it found. I expected (per BBC's declaration of Domingo's superiority over Caruso) that Domingo would win on these 'Vesti' selections, yet I was disappointed in the selection I heard. I was (again surprised) very favorably impressed with Pavarotti's rendition - he seems so dominant, in spite of his lighter tone (as I hear it), that he can make a powerful impression on nearly anyone. There were other surprises in those videos, with singers I don't recall hearing before this, and then there was Michael Bolton ...... So anyway, I found this nice little 3-singer rendition of O'Sole Mio, for humour, yet very well performed. www.youtube.com/watch?v=ERD4CbBDNI0

He stated many times that his style emanated from DiStefano. It's that natural-ness that is God given that makes it...Netrebko has it, she is wonderful. As do many. Thanks for making my day in that I looked into my collection of operatic singers and got all involved again!

So anyway, I found this nice little 3-singer rendition of O'Sole Mio, for humour, yet very well performed. www.youtube.com/watch?v=ERD4CbBDNI0Whilst perusing You Tube, I found a set of very interesting vids titled "Luciano Pavarotti masterclass"...which consists of several Opera singers singing arias with piano accompaniment, and Luciano himself listening and after completion of each, offering a critique of each performance. He's very appreciative of the voice of each, but, what really struck me was how he offered his take on what the role in the opera is and how it should be presented via a voice. To say I was flabbergasted by his interpretations for instruction is not giving enough credit to him. The first tenor, a South Korean, has a fantastic voice, and Pavarotti instructed him that he just needed to express the effects of that aria with greater sustain and then attack at certain points...and Pavarotti really gets into it. Anyway, for those interested in hearing great opera voices and watching them critiqued by the best, this is a must! j
