Hi, I have a PS Audio Digilink iii dac which has 2 sets of outputs, phono and XLR. I currently use the phono outputs to my V-Can which then outputs the signal to my preamp. Now this option is best for headphone soundquality but not for speaker listening. My question, would I be able to use both the phono and XLR at the same time one going directly to the pre amp and one to the V-can and is there such a thing as an XLR to Phono cable? Thx Chris

Nice DAC!
The XLR outputs are balanced and the RCA's are unbalanced. You can use the balanced output only to feed a piece of equipment that has a balanced input, like a pre-amp for example.

Hmmm, I'd disagree with that statement. A balanced output can be used to feed an unbalanced component down stream. There are leads that are wired for the conversion (or make them yourself) i.e. XLR to RCA phono.
This can be dependant on the design of the two pieces of equipment being attached this way though. You might end up creating a ground loop. Under that circumstance you would need to use a proper balanced/unbalanced interface (common in studios and pro work).
As for using both at the same time your best course of action would be asking the manufacturer as, again, it depends on the design of the Digilink. Do you need both simutaneously or would one be switched off when the other is on? If yes to the latter then I see no reason why not.

Thanks guys the xlr to phono's turned up and yes they work a treat, I now have direct feeds from the DAC to pre amp AND to headphone amp, best quality for both. Will now look into making up some decent xlr to phono's. Thank you.
