Hello all, I have a X-Can V2 with Mike's upgrades and the Little Pinkie. Just curious if anyone has any tips or suggestions on reducing the noise floor when using IEMs. (As far as I can recall, I don't hear them when using my headphones). IEM in question is Senn IE80. Sounds great but the noise floor messes with the ambience and silence. Going t let the X-Can warm up and see if its just from being cold. Could be my soldering .

It's likely to be the low impedance headphones, the V2 prefers an impedance of between 80 - 300 ohms.
Mike.

16 ohms is really not ideal with the V2 and you will experience a bit of background hiss.
Mike.

Thanks for the reply Mike . I thought so as much. Wanted to be sure it wasn't just my soldering . Cheers! Austin

You should avoid listening cold and do any test with warm equipment. Try leaving the X-Can on for a week initially and then listening to it. It will be a revelation, if all other equipment is functioning as it should! Don't turn audio equipment off, it ruins the sound and eventually breaks the gear.

I turn my equipment off when I'm not using it. I figure if the tv can be turned on and off however many thousands of times it can't do any harm

It doesn't matter if he leaves the amp on for twenty years because it still won't like the 16ohm load..... no matter of warm up will change his 16ohm headphones into 300ohm headphones. Always turn your equipment off, especially valve gear, valves soon start to go out of specification and their "in spec" figures are rated in hours so if you want them to go out of spec fast then feel free to keep them glowing 24/7. The 85C capacitors in the V2 do not respond well to heat, over a period of time, so if you want them to fail quite soon then please leave the amp turned on 24/7/365. The V2's that have arrived for repair with scorched boards, knackered parts and goosed valves were ALL left on 24/7/365..... I always make it a point to ask the customer. Based on "evidence" (seen by my own eyes)the absolute worst thing you can do is leave your equipment on constantly.... all you are doing is wasting electricity and shortening the working "in spec" life of the internal components. All audio gear sounds better after an initial (15 minutes or so) warm up period and that is all it takes..... leaving it permanently powered up is not necessary. Mike.

Yeah, and Naim for one also recommend re-capping every 10 years. Anything that's going to fail from being used like a standard piece of electronics isn't as bulletproof as I'd like. As it is, a turntable doesn't have stand-by, so if they're not expected it to be effected , again, I don't see the point of having equipment idle. Granted, music does sound rather cold and hard to me when the equipment is cold so I give it a good 1-2 hours first

If you have a link to an article or whatever your 'point' might seem a little less dogmatic
