I will reply as soon as possible, I am currently out in the field testing the PME271M. She appears to be deflecting all the junk we are throwing at her with consumate ease.... I will incorporate the field results into the X-Can v4 kit when the v4 is eventually released. Field tests have shown us that "Mil-spec" is just simply not good enough when it comes to Hi-Fi, we need to incorporate A PME271M to obtain true Milspec Hi Fidelity. I'll be in touch soon.

No worrys mate - test away!
I'm miles away from home until Friday anyway so I'm just playing with the idea of a battery PSU for the QED, replacing those horrid RCA sockets on the back, building a decent PSU for 2nd system home use.......
You really have got me going now ;D

Great job you've done there Mike, looks the part. What did you use to clean the phono's and headphone socket? For the headphone sockets - cotton wool buds dipped in Isopropyl alcohol.... for the phono sockets BRASSO on the outside and cotton wool buds dipped in Isopropyl for the inside.

That's the idea! Hopefully other QED MB45 owners will pick up on this thread eventually and save themselves a few hundred quid forking out on an amp they really don't need.

Most interesting, I thought that ergo amp was chip based . Typical I have potentially a good amp for driving my ergos sitting up in the loft with only the bloody mice for company. When I check the traps tomorrow I will dig the little bugger out if they haven't eaten it. The tape monitor functions seem a bit pointless to me what about a better pot. I would also be interested in a kit of replacement parts once final selections take place keep me in the loop oh wise one When I used the QED many years ago with my old Sen 480classics I thought they were dynamic as hell but very hard sounding perhaps even bright thats why I bought some original Xcans v1's to make them more amenable. Shame the V1's never got to grips with the Ergo2's not enough grip/control. Off topic a bit but the sennheiser 480 classics must be up there with the QED. Worth saving?, I bet they need new foams by now... where from and how much

Too True.
I'm sure the Voyager is a nice piece of kit but I can't justify the outlay for the occasional portable use, let alone a second X-Cans + decent PSU for the 2nd system.
It does make you wonder how many of these cracking little 'can' amps are tucked away in lofts/cupboards. I was up 'til far too late last night (this morning actually) just enjoying this little gem, geriatric as the innards are, or more importantly, enjoying the music.

A pic would be great! I just realised the 470uF in your amp is an axial and I sent you a radial, I'll see if I can find a suitable axial and send it over to you. Anyways...... let's have a look at the old girl

What a day! Pics first I suppose - first a reminder of what the old dear looked like... Caps Away (and the DC thru skt) I forgot to take a pic of the hole I drilled behind the DC Socket for the Riva so I've added a black blob - a bit of air brushing & a beauty spot for her.... And in with the new........ The Riva caused a bit of head scratching. I only had 21mm headroom to play with & I wanted to bypass the diode. Finally, my two pennies worth literally, got rid of the 'orrid foam strips, gave her some new feet 'n' popped her lid back on after a good cleanup.... Result, probably the best tenner I've ever spent. I don't know where to start, rhythm, timing, bass extension & control. Mids & Highs balanced & detailed - cymbals actually sound like their made of metal. I've thrown everything from Zep, PF, Annie Lennox made me shiver - again - Classical had a sense of scale Electronica had bite & tone I'd better stop before I stain me trousers My un-modded X-CansV2 still had it beat by not by as much as you'd think given the price difference of ('CansV2 + X-PSU). You won't be seeing my little 'ole 'Mk1' on Ebay - thats for sure. Don't bother about the cap Mike it wasn't a big deal and you mentioned something about a couple of caps add odd angles anyway. Thanks again mate for the ideas & assistance. THE JUNKIE HAS A NEW FIX

Nice work CJ! My only concern is the Philips 470uF radial ( lead inductance and all that ) I'll look you out a more suitable axial 470uF which will span that bridge a lot better and leave you with less lead kicking about. That 3300uF will be helping things a too Nice caps those Panasonic NHG series, I am using them in the X-10 v3 to great effect.... lots of people (me included) extoll the virtues of the FM / FC series but seldom do you see anything about the NHG, they are nice and compact and in some cramped applications you'll get away with a 3300uF NHG where a 2200uF FC would struggle to get into. Do you notice a bit more bite to the sound now? A bit more fizz and life about it.... that was my immediate observation after recapping mine, a lot more of everything good. By the way the little brown caps are NIC - NRSZ series and the red ones are Dubilier Long life aluminium electrolytic capacitors.... just incase you were wondering And...... man, those RIFA PME271 rock! I'm strapping them across everything at the moment like they're going out of fashion. Anyways, I'm waffling now.... glad you're enjoying the amp CJ. All the best. Mike.

By the way CJ...... do you know you crop up on page one, number three, under a Google search for "Qed MB45" ? Bloody strange you'd have thought Google bot would have listed the thread and not a members profile! Have a look!

Ooerr - I'm famous. Oh yes! Eg, There's a realism to cymbal decay which is quite amazing for a bit of kit that was sold as budget kit. Took it out just out of idle curiosity and tried it with the 18v 3A switch mode from a long gone HP printer and a 12v 1A wall wart. The difference was startling - RIFA went back in rapid. Hope you've got a few to share! I've got a list - which should be my ebay list - of kit which is under threat of being on the other end of a hot wand

if the frequency response and distortion curves on the top of that amp are accurate, it's a pretty damned good amp!

I love these threads ... amazing what a little effort can acheive without busting a gut. If I knew what I was doing I'd love to have a bash at my Rocksan main rig amps - but I know that would end in tears. Top of my list is to find some one who will do the X-DAC V3 for me ... ( It's been such a long time since SandyK posted his mods that I'm almost tempted to have a go given tha tI'm spending a lot of time with vinyl anyhow .. what's the worst that can happen.

What might a Qed headphone amp upgrade package of components cost. I have saved the little blighter from the mice in the loft and it is now time to get the ERGO2's properly juiced up. In fact I need something to listen to my latest toy a Technics 1210 dj deck with originlive arm board and Roksan Nima unipivot tone arm . Unfortunately my little boy doesnt take too kindly to music after his bedtime so it could be the Ergos/qed for some time to come .

Hey, there is some guy called Mike Grierson who loves a challenge. He can only tell you (and me) to funck off ! I've been baiting Mike on an off for months ... he's not biting .. one day I'll catch him off guard and he'll offer to try the x-dac v3 with your mods. I'd happily live without for a month or two while he listened to the before and after mods. One day ... even if I have to drive up there, and he stands over me while I perform the mods Alex!

Sol Actually, I don't blame Mike. Mike appears to be as comfortable as I am ,about modding someone else's gear where there is a double sided board with VERY fine PCB traces around the analogue I.C.s. Alex

Sol Mike appears to be as comfortable as I am ,about modding someone else's gear where there is a double sided board with VERY fine PCB traces around the analogue I.C.s. Busted! and there was me thinking I'd get away with my secret fear of fine PCB traces No, seriously, I don't mind the PCB's I just don't have any interest (whatsoever) in DACs (especially ones with fine traces!) and double sided PCB's just piss me off big time... they're fine for a one time fix but if you're a sectioned roller (sectioned into the local mental bin for rolling chips) who power rolls various chips then double sided boards with fine traces are your worst nightmare. I will get round to doing yours Sol, I promise, but I have a backlog of pinkies to make, test and ship before I can even start thinking about anything else. My short break, courtesy of HM, has pretty much thrown a huge fckin' "official" spanner in the works and I'm playing catch up..... I hope to be back to normal shortly..... I'll do a couple of 24 hour sessions in the workshop and that should help clear the backlog
