Lasagne on the way to the oven :-) A bolognese sauce filling. Topped off with bechamel, parmesan and cheddar. A dusting of paprika, pinch of oregano and a twist of black pepper. Usual rules: cook one for each of us. I eat mine. My wife eats half of hers; I finish it. Simple side salad... chopped watercress, rocket and beet leaves. Fresh basil, onions and home grown tomato. Hellmann's mayo. Splash of olive oil. The tomatoes - the first of this year's crop. I've rested from growing tomatoes for two summers as I grew tired of blight and a failed crop. But this year has been fabulous. The recent cold spell has delayed their ripening but they are OK now. Regards, Derek

Desipte my own personal dislike of tomatoes and lasagne it still looks damn fine. Nice one Derek If that photo was uploaded directly after taking, that must be on the table by now or even in your stomach.

Oh, our best crop this year is lemon grass, it's gone mental! Grapes are very sweet apparently (another dislike of mine, terrible with fruit ), oranges are tasty, lemons a little down this year, nispero (loquat) are always good-it's a shame none of us like them but give them away to neighbours instead, golden plumbs a complete failure this year, most herbs as good as usual. A local village, Sayalonga, is a big producer of nispero and has a festival to celebrate the harvest. This looks like a better use, must hunt some down

Desipte my own personal dislike of tomatoes and lasagne it still looks damn fine. Nice one Derek If that photo was uploaded directly after taking, that must be on the table by now or even in your stomach. Photographed last Friday... just a happy memory. Really, you don't like tomatoes? Do you enjoy any pasta at all? Or is it the lasagne-type recipe thing you don't enjoy? I can imagine lasagne with chicken in a wine, garlic and cream sauce. Wow. Or maybe hold the lasagne - chicken in the wine and cream sauce.. few mushrooms. Saute potatoes? Or grilled roasted peppers and aubergines? D.

In the UK we are having a very large blackberry crop. Mine are a fabulous thornless variety and the blackbirds are having a great time. They gorge on the fruit endlessly it seems. And then they poop purple staines on whatever's on the washing line. Runner bean harvest excellent... dinner conversation is usually 'what are we having with the beans tonight?' Have recently been visiting a local and independent butcher in our closest town, Oswestry. He cuts T-bones while you watch and they are gorgeous. Have a pair of them in the fridge, now, waiting for tomorrow evening. If it's not raining then it's barbie on down. 25 Euros well spent.... I hope. Aagain, usual rules, I eat mine plus the remaining half of hers! It's tough, but someone's gotta do it. Sounds like a photo opportunity. Nope... not the steaks. Of me... before and after. Will probably get stretch marks. I'm not keen on fruit either. An occasional banana is ok. And a fruit salad can be good if sprinkled with a little sugar and left to let out some juices. I'm ok with cooked apples in those British classics, apple crumble or Eve's pudding. D.

On the rare occasion I dragged, kicking and screaming, to BK or similar it's out with the tomatoes, in with the ketchup and mustard, madness! It's the pasta I object to, just not a fan. Singular exception is spaghetti bolognese, heavy with the cheese Your alternative suggestion, with ALL the extras, is far more intetesting.

I also hate Tomatoes with a vengence and know several other men who are the same. I often wonder if it was a result of subliminal advertising when we were children - e.g.when Popeye eats spinach there are a few frames of " and hates tomatoes"
I love TK, homemade sauces heinz soups etc but not raw, fresh or tinned tomatoes.

I fully concur sir. Thank god I'm not the only loopy one! Other oddities, love cherry, strawberry, passion fruit etc. flavour anything but dislike the real fruits Like apples but hate apple juice. Much prefer raw veg to cooked or blanched. With the odd exception. I'm sure there's more...maybe it was that "You're not leaving the table until you've cleared your plate" mentality that I'm sure many of us grew up with.

Sundried tomatoes are really nice, when fried, but these things they sell in the supermarkets are just red water balls. You can't beat a "proper" home grown tomato but, unfortunately, the eating season only lasts a few weeks. I am partial to the occasional tinned "plum" tomato and they are great with bacon, eggs, black pudding, sausage etc. Plum tomatoes on toast are even "occasionally" acceptable but they must be pierced with a knife to extract all the juice before being dumped on the buttered toast..... lots of black pepper on top (or a generous dusting for you posh folk).

I'm sure there's more...maybe it was that "You're not leaving the table until you've cleared your plate" mentality that I'm sure many of us grew up with. I got to "leave the table" but when I returned, the following day, the same stuff was on my plate....... my Dad was old school but it never did me any harm. Ying tong ying tong olay olay biscuit barrel, I feel like a bouncy bouncy skeet mama papa, patang patang, hit me with some sugar mama!
