fanboy wrote robdeszan wrote I use a AKG K701 and they sounds very good and detailed with my green solo - better than Sennheiser HD 600. In near future I get a AKG K271 for test direct from AKG in Vienna. If a have fortunateness I can see their manufacturing too ;D Got a pair of AKG K701's last week, currently have them running in 24/7 using a test and burn cd. I agree they certainly sound naff out of the box but are starting to sound much better now, bass is still missing the low notes but hopefully that will improve after another week of run in

Fritz, your comments made me think about how I hear the K701. Yes, it is true, they are very neutral and detailed. I think you have had yours for some time. I do think that my pair need a deal more loosening up, they have several hundred hours now but I rather think they may need a deal more. Listening carefully to a couple of tracks just now and comparing to the W1000 my feeling is that they still stop too quickly, they lose the decay of notes and the reverberation of the instrument body. I noticed this to a marked degree when they were new, eg cymbal strikes would be a quick "ting" and stop, no ring. I think they are still doing the same sort of thing but not as marked. As if the cones were too stiff or the coil stopping too quickly. This gives a very clean sound but somewhat hollow. This is less noticeable on the Yamamoto than the Solo although still discernable. Bottom line, I think they need a lot more burn-in and for now, at least, I do prefer the W1000. Fanboi, the K701 like the W1000 need a lot of burn in. Try about 500 hours to start with, some have reported as high as 800 hours.

Fanboi, the K701 like the W1000 need a lot of burn in. Try about 500 hours to start with, some have reported as high as 800 hours. Miguel, I have given these a fair working out, over 10 days in a blanket playing full range dynamic music at obscene volume, plus another 2 -3 weeks of playing normally all the time. As I noted, I do feel they need more and I might be one of those who think 800 hrs. After yesterdays comparison and analysis they are now scheduled for a fortnight shouting to themselves in the "sin bin". To my ears, they lack the subtlety that the W1000 show with the Solo and the music does not seem to flow in the same way. With the W1000 I can readily lose myself in the music when it is something really beautiful, the K701 just do not have the same degree of involvement ATM. Thanks for your input.

"My wife prefers the K701." Women usually have more acute hearing ! They must have, because they always seem to be telling you to turn the volume down ! ;D SandyK

Hmmm, womens hearing is different that is for sure, I seem to recall Mrs X could not hear what I said if it was said in a normal tone in the same room, but could hear every word if I had a conversation with a friend down by the back fence 90 ft away.

"My wife prefers the K701." Women usually have more acute hearing ! They must have, because they always seem to be telling you to turn the volume down ! ;D SandyK Women can maintain their high frequency hearing longer. That does not mean that they hear better. I am not aware of any woman recording engineers making waves. The geometry of a womans head is different and THAT will lead to other headphone preferences! I have not been seriously involved with headphones very long, but have noticed that pushing the cans only 1mm closer to the ear completely changes the sound. Quality phones that are lacking bass improve when the earpads are compressed, cans with too much bass are tamed by adding a foam spacer to get them a bit further away from the ear and of course the position of the driver in relation to your ear canal can change EVERYTHING. Just moving the cans a couple of mm forward or back can improve the experience (or destroy) the balance between high, mid and low. I am surprised that very high quality phones do not have adjustable geometry to optimise the sound. It surely would not cost much to implement and increase the amount of sensible tweaking possible! I am sure that geometry is not the only reason for audible differences, but it seems to be greater than any of the other technical explanations!

Isn't that probably better ascribed to prejudice than ears? And waves is made by software not recording engineers

Yes, it was a sham. But wasn't Renate a recording engineer ? (or has my memory failed me again ?)

Nigel There are probably quite a few very competent female recording engineers. But these days, recording engineers (in general) don't seem to achieve their previous high status, most likely due to the more affluent musos with their own home studios. Alex

Sol I just googled the following : Elton John was briefly married to Renate Blauel (14 February 1984 - 1987)
I was only one "l" out !

Ahhh .. oh well!
Mental note to self: Be sure to read the post before hitting reply
Where the hell did I assimilate that useless and inaccurate sound-bite form?
I reckon I going senile early .. must have been too much of the "bad stuff" when I was younger. You know the thing - you have a word or name at the tip of your tongue, but it's just not there .. all that's left is a slight gnaw as you stare blankly at space in some vain hope the name will come to you. It doesn't of course, and you are left worrying that the name has been lost - only to have it pop into your head just as you make a cup of tea two ours later.
I couldn't remember the name of a chap in the office earlier today - needed to send him an email and could think of his name - jeesh I'm losing it. Wouldn't have minded if I hadn't been working with him for nearly a year! Out of the office for two weeks and I'm floundering in a sea of liquid grey matter!

On the topic of the OPs post, If I have the money, and the solo, are teh w1000s what I should be getting? I thought the W1000 sounded very good w/ the Green Solo. But the K501 sounded great. The beauty is that you should be able to pick up a pair of K501 for about $100. Worth a shot IMO. ;D

My main headphones are going in for a little refresh. I dug out the old Green Solo today. First time it has been switched on in maybe four years. If I remember correctly, Graham used to say it needed a couple of weeks, switched on 24/7, to sound at it's best. I tried it with the AKG K501 and the Koss Porta Pro, the latter proving a real eye opener.
