My system is getting complicated so I needed a map to remind me about just what is connected to what. Just one of a number of possibilities and I haven't included the home-office system which is, effectively, my vinyl input via the M-Audio 2496 sound card into the Win 8.1 PC... Derek

I'd like to have the Creek and MF amp combo, myself! I have a Rothwell Indus SE passive dual volume control line stage (coarse and fine volume controls, not left and right) and a Roksan Caspian M stereo amp. I'd love to have that big MF amp for my ATC SCM-12 SL speakers...although the Caspian M is great...that choke rectified MF is one I'd like to hear with these speakers!
Good map...my DACs are AQ Dragonfly, Schiit Modi, Theta Cobalt 307 (still good), AudioNote modified DAC Kit, Peachtree Asynchronous X-1 USB to Coax out interface, and an anti-jitter box..the Audio Alchemy DTi 32, and a couple SoundBlaster dac's. All hard wired.
Yeah, setting up a map is definitely needed with all of this stuff hooked up to all of this stuff. Whew! J

Hi Johnsan
Looks like both you and Derek are a couple of equipment junkies ! A suitable high quality DAC (most likely expensive) with several inputs would make life easier. Mine has 2 Toslink and one Coax SPDIF inputs. Perhaps not wanting to get up off your tails occasionally and perhaps becoming overweight couch potatoes is making things very complicated ? I used to be like you guys once, with a separate DTS Decoder, a separate Dolby decoder and surround sound as well. There is so much to go wrong, and you can end up chasing your tail chasing niggling little issues. I used to have different coloured cable ties on various leads to aid with lead identification at the rear of the cabinets.
Regards Alex

Hey Alex...I'm like a pack rat, man. I just can't see selling off any of this stuff I've collected over the years, and now with DAC's that are running at 348kbps and with DSDX2 stuff...WTHeck is goin' on? I don't have enough disposable income to catch up to the latest stuff. But, it's all a hobby and fun. Even when I can't find the reason for no sound sometimes!
And, my AudioNote turntable system definitely gets me up off my neat and trim little arse to lift the tonearm after 26 minutes or so. Lots of exercise daily there..as I still find many of my non-digitally mastered oldie LP's to make digital sources sound like little 0's and 1's coming out of the speakers.
But, unlike your map...mine would look more like a labyrinth or maze. Not nearly as structured as yours.
Very highly regarded, J

Did you ever try RealTime records from artists like Joe Marino that were direct to disc ?

I have a direct cut disc by Canadian Brass on the Umbrella label... each side cut in one take, no edits possible, what pressure. But the boys done good. It's an excellent performance.

I don't think I have...Sheffield Labs? Most of my LP collection is from LP bins at Dearborn Music west of Detroit, Michigan...their 99 cents bin. I look at 'em in store and if visibly okay, take 'em home, clean 'em on my VPi record cleaning machine, cue 'em up and just smile and listen. When all controls on my kit are set correctly and time of day and me are compatible to listening...it's magic.
I know there is better out there, but at my financial level, I couldn't be happier!

Looks like people will pay ridiculous amounts for some of these M&K RealTime LPs . Scroll down to International sellers. www.ebay.com.au/sch/i.html?_trksid=p2050601.m570.l1313.TR0.TRC0.H0&_nkw=M%26K+REALTIME+...&_sacat=0&_from=R40

Right Alex...and real gold is oft times found in the 99cents bay! I have found some real gems there. Dearborn Music looks at Estate sales and uncovers some real beauties...that I own now.
That link reminds me of the inflated pricing of vacuum tubes...valves...nowadays. Sometimes there are some "sort of" steals there. I just popped $19.95 for a single, late date (1970's), Siemens 6dj8 for my AN preamp. The date codes on this valve are a match to 3 others I have of that same model. So, now I have a quad. I have hoarded about 20 of that type valve, both Siemens and Amperex, because they will be and are even now, becoming scarce. My MF X-Cans v.1 also takes that type. So, $20 for a single of that type, these days, ain't bad. And there is also a return policy if it's a dud.
But, $99 for an LP, is too much. However, a new Music Direct catalog arrived this weekend in the mail and there is a listing there for the Beatles new 14 mono LP's set from the original master tapes that is offered for.....get this....$336.99! And that collection...again...is monaural. So, one MUST HAVE a quality monaural hifi set-up, to maximize THAT purchase, I am surmising.
The 99cent bin is fine with me, Alex. J

Also, I apologize to Derek and Alex...got Derek's system map mixed up in my head with Alex's post...post the system map.
Getting old sometimes mixes up the queue in the mind.
And Derek...I was familiar with the Sheffield label's "Direct to LP" type LP's from the late 1970's or so. But, I never really heard a difference when played on the equipment of the day, back then. And, "Canadian Brass" is THEE professional brass group. I wouldn't think they'd mess up anything...fantastic playing!
It's 2am here and I'm finally dozing at the keyboard. J

Was direct cut substantially better? All that is missing is the record-to-tape-and-playback part of the excercise and that's the part which is not responsible for significant or damaging distortion; the absence of tape cures something that didn't need curing. Thinking about it, what the direct cut method may have done was limit any playing around with the sound from a 'mastering' point of view. Thoughts?

Hi Derek...Sheffield Labs had a reputation of producing some of the most alive sounding LP's around...but, my system in those days wasn't good enough to recognize how good they were. I had a belt drive Philips 212 with a Grace 9E MM cartridge and the inboard phono stage of the Luxman integrated amp I was using. Their reputation was superb, but I wasn't privy to that quality because of my system's high-end shortcomings.
And I see that Graham Slee has a phono stage set up that has built in response curves for the likes of London FFR and some others...which I've read is a Slee phenomena...the Elevator, I believ. I don't have but one London FFR LP, though.
Interesting direction for this thread, eh? J
