minivan It is always good practice to turn the power off first. You may get a short loud burst of hum if you unplug interconnects this way. There is also the possibility of a small (harmless) electric shock with some equipment when you do this. If the headphones are plugged into a power amplifier/preamplifier with automatic headphone switching, you also run the risk of a loud burst of program through the speakers, as the volume is often turned up higher for headphone listening. depends on the design of the amp, usually it's ok
but better safe than sorry i say
i always make a habit of turning the volume control all the way down too

Having to switch off an amp each time before doing side by side comparisons with different amps using the same headphones would make a decent comparison using the same passage in a piece of music very difficult! But then as Alex (SandyK) explained recently driving two amps simultaneously from the same source would be to the detriment of sound quality.

There are some reasonable M-Audio external ADC/DACs that have 4 channel (2x stereo) outputs. That should make switching easier. I still question why one needs to switch so quickly. Don't you all trust your ears? It is the only audio interface that you have and can be very easily fooled by slight differences for a short period of time, but NEVER during extended listening periods.

"I always hot plug, no problems in 20 years of doing it.... just ram her home fast and pull her out fast. " Mike Are we still talking about Audio here? Many people would be interested to know that equipment using internal SMPS PSUs often has a case potential of between 80-120V AC (230-240V systems) If you are using an earthed amplifier, you may get a harmless little bite if you hot plug. Further to my previous post :
I just measured the voltage between the earth side of the Oppo DV981HD DVD player's line out RCA sockets and actual earth. The reading was 84V AC, whether switched off, or playing.

Please explain ? I do burn in on anything as and when, not in a continuous burst unless I've paid the insurance....

More: I should say part of my pleasure is in hearing the cables/interconnects/cans/speakers etc "come good" in the various and subtle ways they do. I know y'all agree or there would be no forum..... Love your posts.
