Hi guys, Just want to quickly give som shoutouts to the people on this forum, everyone here is very helpful and definitely nicer than the people over at headfi. I currently have a pair of Sennheiser HD600 connected to a Musical Fidelity M-DAC and an X-can v2, really love the setup. My problem is that I only have the one DAC, since most of my listening with headphones occurs in front of my computer located in the bedroom, I'm a bit tired of having a long RCA cable lying around from my tape out on my amp. Do you guys have any good tips for an extra not overly expensive DAC? I was perhaps looking to find the first model V-DAC if I can. Are there any cheaper alternatives, the budget of a student is rarely favorable Any tips you might have would be appreciated greatly! Best, Anthony

Hi Alex,
Thanks for the input!
Are you refering to the DIY-kit posted at the top of the page or the ifi audio? I'm a complete newby when it comes to DIY and the ifi audio DAC was a bit pricey. Would like to stay under 100 USD if that's even possible. I'm also wondering wether the difference in sound will too great when going from an M-DAC to something that much cheaper.
Best, Anthony

Hi Anthony I was referring to the iFi. You are unlikely to get anything either decent, or that will last, for under 100 USD. Even decent internal sound cards cost typically more than the iFi. Try typing "DAC", then select "Audio" in ebay and you will see what I mean.
Regards Alex

That's what I was afraid of, and what originally led from a cheap DAC to an M-DAC in the first place. The same problem there, started out with a budget of 100 USD ended up spending a looooot more I wish you would have a choice of two outputs on the DAC, it just feels excessive buying yet another expensive DAC when I've already gotten one, but I guess there's no way getting around that in the end. Has anyone had any experience with the HRT Music Streamers?

I find it a chore to set things up for listening through the computer( PC World Boxing Day 'special' HP which has a 24/96 as it is, which is the same as the M1 DAC usb). Is there a USB cable on the market that'd make it worthwhile to stick with the MF? eg Supra, Wireworld Ultraviolet etc

I'm considering a Cambridge DacMagic XS usb dac. Seems to be a competent little gadget. Would something like that suffice plugged into your PC's USB socket? If you found, say, a 2nd hand X-DAC or whatever you'd need an amp too. The DacMagic XS is an all-in-one.

Stumbled upon THIS listing on ebay and remembered your post. Decent spec. & changeable opamps. Pop in a cheap box and add a Maplin cheapie PSU (£15?) and you're done.

Derek I re-read the original post - I see now that your headphone amp is where your computer is so you don't need another amp. That DAC board from ebay looks worth a go :-)
