A name once (or numerous times actually) synonymous with "Elevator Music" as critics labeled Sr. Mantovani in the U.S. - when the term "Semi-Classical" was applied to one or more of Mantovani's LP's, the classical music critics had a cow. When Mantovani took a break from the 'romantic' genre and recorded serious music, the results were quite good, but that's when the 'Semi-Classical' term came about and trouble started. I remember the mushy stuff that my parents were so fond of playing, and I was not fond of hearing, but since Mantovani was purchased an LP at a time at our house, I didn't have a way to assemble a 'least offensive' list for playback, since there was no practical way to separate the tracks in those days.
But now with iTunes, there is a way, and I grabbed a few the other day, recorded in the early 1970's: Claire de Lune Main Theme from Exodus Solveig's Song Sunrise Sunset
I didn't choose these in a small, miniscule effort to salvage the reputation of the master of Light Music, but rather because listening to just these 4 outstanding tracks, I'm reminded of what real music sounds like. I have nearly every genre represented in my music files, from rap to black metal to "female vocals" etc., but those are what they are and these are what they are, and these are pretty darn good.
