With the main parts of a new PC on the way (Win8.1) one of the last things to sort is the optical drive(s). Without breaking the bank, my wallet is already screaming rape , what is the best way to go, with recommended models; A) Combo drive, Blu Ray/DVD/CD rewriter. B) Dedicated Blu Ray rewriter and separate DVD/CD rewriter C) Another way? TIA, PS I had narrowed in on this one LG combo

I see also that you are planning to work on XOvers for Naim SBL speakers. Are they the ones that sold originally for around GBP2,400 ?

Cheers Alex, I pushed the button!
If memory serves the SBLs started at around £1500, by the end of the MKII's life, yes, I think they were roughly £2.5K. They were discontinued, amongst other reasons, because they became too expensive to produce. Later on to be replaced by the further developed version, SL2, at a vastly higher price but I never heard a set of those. I believe your friend, Martin Colloms, gave the SL2 a big thumbs up.

Hi Chris It will be interesting to see what you do with them. My Sydney E.E. friend recently upgraded the XOvers for his old B&W 801s with great results. He used DEQX to calibrate them, and achieved a far smoother result, especially at the top end, than originally.

You can go a long way with Xovers to improve things. I won't be going down the DEQX route but fortunately the path I'm taking is well trodden with plenty of component-value to effect documentation posted all over the place. (I have in the past upgraded the xovers on some Gale GS302 to great effect) With the SBLs in particular, the original xovers were only meant as a stop gap, being designed to be used active. The components used are of the most basic quality and therefore easy to improve upon without going boutique-parts mad. Even then the xovers will only be temporary, once both power amps are built I have Naim's own SNAXO 2-4 and appropriate power supply to take over duties to create a fully active system I will pop up some pics when it all starts coming together...
