Last Wednesday, I was able to put through their paces, via a pair of B&W 800s worth >$21K , the Class A preamp, SC DAC , and the JLH PSUs for USB use that many of you guys here have also constructed. The main source of music was via a Corsair Voyager with files ripped that many claim can't possibly sound better than the CD they came from. We also listened to numerous CDs via an Oppo 95.
At a previous session, much of the material came from the same Corsair Voyager using the JLH PSU through a DSD capable Wyred 4v Sound
(W4S), but using it's digital volume control DIRECTLY into david2vk's high performance 100W/Ch DIY amplifier, and into those incredible sounding B&W 800s.
This time, after all the CDs were played, we ended the session by playing via the analogue route of Corsair Voyager plugged into the Oppo 95 using a JLH PSU and modified USB cable, coax SPDIF into the SC DAC, Class A preamp, and then the power amplifier.
I had remarked at the previous session that singer Jheena Lodwick had lost much of the sexiness of her voice in the track
"Do That To Me One More Time", and that to me, Rebeccaa Pidgeon had also lost much of the individuality of her voice in "Spanish Harlem"
The look at the time from Allan suggested that I was still having a very bad off day. It only took seconds for the host to pick the improvement over what we had heard the previous Saturday.
The standout for me was "Yello -Bostich ( Reflected). It sounded like you were right there among them. Absolutely incredible !
I have never heard anything sound so good before, and I don't expect to ever hear it as good again, other than at David's place.
Many people claim that 32 bit volume control directly into a power amplifier is the way to go, but after this, I would suggest NOT to write off a good preamplifier etc. Ideally, we need power amplifiers with less gain in this day of higher output digital sources.
