Ha ha.. maybe this should have been posted in Sandyk's "music files with identical 1s and 0s can sound different" thread :-)
A little background... BT (British Telecom) are a (the?) key internet provider here in the UK. If you get your broadband through them you are given a router called the 'HomeHub'. It's now on version 4, with 5 on the horizon.
I've been on the HomeHub 2 so I took advantage of a free upgrade to the current HomeHub 4 because it's, well, free... and happens to be dual band and an all round newer piece of kit. Meaning, maybe, it'll cope better with our increasing array of kit that needs such connections. Viz;. two phones, three TVs, laptop, printer, satellite TV receiver and my key audio source, the amazing little Squeezebox Touch.
This morning got the new hub installed and up running in no time, switched on my SBT and am astounded at how improved the sound quality is.
I have always been satisfied with using the Touch wirelessly connected; could'nt be bothered fit a cable. But the new hub is a definite upgrade. The sound seems more tightly focussed with a slightly better illusion of stage depth. Bass definition has gone up a notch and complex HF sounds like cymbals are more finely drawn.
Usually when I make any changes I'm likely to be initially disappointed or merely unimpressed; I reckon because of anxiety and the resulting failure to be able to just relax and listen. Next day judgements are far more valuable.
But today I'm so impressed with how valuable a change the new router is proving to be. It's coping at the moment with sending HDTV programming to the main Panasonic plasma as well as playing hi-res music through the SBT. No dropouts yet :-)
I am locked into a 'just one more track' session for sure and the lawn needs mowing. And now postie has just delivered my new 3TB HDD; a new home for my music library. As long as I start the mowing by 2:30 I'll be OK. Just. The boss is home early today. Better have a chilled dry white standing by.
