Just got hold of one, after enjoying my Neco portable pro (with RCA's for CD player listening) for such a long time and wondering, how much has the Mosfet changed since I last owned one. I also have had a tone control unit built for me to tweek sounds when playing rough recordings.
Just running it in, will post up when cooked !
EDIT 13th June : initial impressions are, it's not like I remember, I found my earlier mosfet( V2 ) too polite that's why i moved it on really, this has more bite and more excitment, like the portables except on a bigger scale, which is what I was hoping for really.......I love the sound of my portable pro which at the time, for me beat the cheaper basic portable with more seperation, but the new portables may have that now due to changes most likely based on the portable pro.
So it's got enough scale and yes when the recording allows it does do bass notes better which Neco claims. But as stated before the delivery is much more alive. I think Neco is on the right track trying to make it sound like the portables big brother plus. I will give a complete summary soon, but one other thing i have noticed about this latest version is, that i found myself tapping my fingers or toes along to music, something i only usually do with a speaker based systems not with headphones. So there is some magic woofle dust in there that gets you involved in the music without you realizing it ! Also where as the portable pro gets a little tough to listen too as i whack the volume up, this amp just gets better and better with volume ! careful ears..
Price may be an issue with some people compared to how much these amps used to cost not a million years ago, but internal improvements, 2 source inputs now with front select button, and push button gain underneath plus 2 power supplies has helped that, quite rightly so. So I am seriously thinking of getting a tuner again and listening to some plays or radio documentaries like I used to !
I listen to a wide range of recordings, some, wonderfully recorded, others rough as sin, movie soundtracks, 60's acid rock, 80's independant, some classical etc.
Putting a fresh head on and remembering some of the amps i've tried in the past and how much they cost, i am just going to use ' customer expectation ' views on price........considering the price of things these days £200 is not a huge amount of money, if I were to be asked, do you think this amp sounds good for the money, I would say yes you bet ! you can tell it is very capable and compared to the older V2, to me it sounds quite a different beast.
Neco has obviously worked hard to achieve this sound and no doubt listened to many of his previous customers views, something a lot of makers would not do. So for the moment I will conclude, the sound is above my expectations, which is a nice change as there is so much kit out there that I know buyers just end up ' living with' poor aspects of their purchases either because they paid a lot of money for it '' so it must be good'' or '' so many other reviews said it was great, it must be''....
This amp is fresh, dynamic, has a great sound stage and separation, it does bass, has better treble, is a toe tapper...and it goes loud without going bad...and all wrapped up in a synergy package of sound and looks......that's got to be good for £200 surely. ( oh and i'm not even using my new tone control thingy I got built ! )
Edit 16th June :
Just to add just around the 100 hour burn in time was up, the treble, has changed to a noticable degree, in that rougher recordings now sound better than in the first running in hours...........this has been noticed NOT by just constantly listening to the amp and just getting used to it and my ears/brain getting accustomed, but by only using the same 4 cd's that i know have certain qualities/ peaks , over run- in and listening in now and then for any changes....so as not to tempt my imagination that it has changed when it has not.
Edit 17 June:
Finally I would like to say that this amp is making some of my recordings sound like quality turntable recordings ! It draws you in without you knowing it, i have found myself listening 1 1/2 -2 hours past my bed time, just because it is so listenable to.........
It must be more transparent than I originally thought as it seems to make the feeling that i have headphones on my head almost disappear, i always thought my headphones just got uncomfortable after a certain length of time and they are comphy, but now i realize it was because the music i was listening too was not presented as well as it could have been making me loose interest at certain times.........not with this amp though !
Highly recomended.
In a nutshell...compared to V2
Extra subtle involving clearly heard detail
Really unveiled sound compared to V2
Gets more open and airy with volume
Quality reaches all types of recordings, favouring none
Takes sharp edges off, without killing anything off
More realistic and convincing
Just running it in, will post up when cooked !
