I've been curious about getting these headphones but I've had no word on if they'd be good for rock and metal. I'm pretty curious to know this, because I was considering upgrading from my grado sr80i

I've only recently acquired a pair myself so am still getting used to them. (I'm a bit of a rock head with metal tendencies) I think it depends on what you expect from them, if you're wanting thundering bass lines then these are not for you. So far I'd say they're pretty even handed on frequency response, if real bass is there you'll hear it but there is no augmentation. Speed and detail are very good and they also have that foot tapping quality. Their major strengths are telling-it-like-it-is (warts 'n' all) and having a surprisingly "open" sound for a closed headphone.
They are VERY fussy of positioning on your head, you'll need to get to know the best way of obtaining a a good seal between your head and the cups. This is essential, without the seal being complete they sound poor. You cannot wear glasses while listening through these for this very reason so not the sort of can to multi task with if you're a specs wearer.
Thus far they have a big thumbs up from me.

How about compared to the Grado sr80i? Have you had any experience with those?

No, sorry, I've only heard one old set of Grodos (can't remember which model, just remember them being very solid metal looking) quite some time ago and really not liking them i.e. I found them uncomfortable and rather shrill to my ears.

I own the K550 and the Alessandro MS-1 (essentially Grados) so I hope I can offer some useful input. First up I've had the K550 for nearly a year and only recently started to really like them. I put that down to a number of factors including some headband bending I tried for better sealing and also the earpads breaking in, as well as the right rig to pair them with. Still, I wouldn't call their sound totally suited for rock or metal. They're quite quite open-sounding and spacious and can often suck some of the life out of really intense tracks. They can certainly keep up speed-wise and showcase every note beautifully, but you might find them lacking in that bit of pazazz that really brings rock to life.
The MS-1, together with other Grados I've heard (SR80i and a few others) are more on the other side of the spectrum, having a much more in-your-face bassy and intense experience. They miss out on some of the fine detail the K550 offers but you get more punch in the delivery. They do have issues with regards to comfort over longer periods compared to the K550, and some people just straight up hate how they sound.
Really it's a toss-up. If you prefer listening to rock and metal to be bathed in the music and absorb the sound go for the K550. If you want an intense sound go for Grados. It's also worth noting that if you listen to other genres, the K550s probably have more genre bandwidth than the SR-80i.

sounds pretty good especially in classical music.Looks beautiful case it is made by steel outside.I have to go back and re-listen to all my music because of how clear and detailed all the music sounds.
