Hi Alex
I was tempted to go along this year but TBH having a listen to most of those systems just reminds me of how far ahead of the game we DIY lot are.
Most of that commercial stuff just sounded horrid with one or two exceptions (yup I always like the AN room for music). All sound and no music is how I’d describe most of the other stuff.
To be fair those hotel rooms are not the best to get a good sound going.
Interesting article though
Take care

Almost exactly my experience Shaun. I went to a show in an Edinburgh hotel a few years ago. Heard Naim stuff for the first time and genuinely couldn't understand what the fuss was all about. I really didn't like it. Found a room running gorgeous looking and sounding valve kit called 'Einstein', fed to amazing little speakers. They were Totem Arrows, I think. Tiny floorstanders that sounded huge, and appeared to have an invisible subwoofer hidden away inside them somewhere. But the real revelation for me was the Audio Note room. Can't honestly remember what kit they had on, but I stayed for about 45 minutes just wallowing in the music. It was fantastic and easily the best and most musical sound I have ever heard. Jeff

Hey Jeff
How’s it going?
embarrassingly enough the last show that I went to was at the invite of a certain employee of the Scottish company that begins with L. he asked me for an honest opinion on their music room sound with all of the big gun amps and speakers (the crazy money ones)and became quite angry when I gave one.
No more invites oh dear
The AN system was I think there cheapest turntable and integrated amp with AN floor standers playing rage against the machine. Sounded really good IMHO as did the other stuff they played.
The other kit
Well mostly
Lacking cohesion and musical integrity I’d call it but hey someone must like that stuff.
Take care

No more invites oh dear Ooops! I remember falling out with my rep. of the same brand. Although I had plenty of experience with their product, the shop I was managing at the time had taken them on for the multi room equipment (which back then was superb). The owner then got talked into taking their normal product along with Loewe vision products. Back off to bonnie Scotland to be robotised again! Anyhoosen, On setting up the then top of the range record deck back in the main dem room, I was not happy with the sound I was getting, double checked, triple checked, changed partnering equipment etc. Nope, don't like that. Brought my Roksan in for comparison, blew the shop deck away. Hmmmmmm Called in the rep (also a setup/installations instructor), "can you get this thing to work properly". 3 hours later, "there you go, it's perfect now". Sounded bloody worse to me! Fired up the Roksan again and the reps jaw hit the floor. So I very delicately announced I thought theirs was "shyte" A friend for life! (sic) Back to the shows, (welcome back my friend, to the show that never ends.....) we religiously went to the Heathrow show as it was then. Again most the rooms were quite poor, usually playing some kind of obscure only-the-special-club-know noise that passed for music. One of the last times went the best room was playing Fleetwood Mac's The Dance live DVD in surround sound. That was easily the best room, very modest kit too! Loved the album ever since.

Hi Chris Yup that brand is world famous for that sort of stuff. They ask for ''honesty'' and then when they get it... Well ''they don't like it up em''do they Chris? They went through a phase of dealers not being allowed to stock any of the competition also if I remember rightly. Oh yes the Thorens TD 150 copy turntable. Well my old Gerard 301 made short work of that piece of kit. From my experience with the LP12 (which was quite some time ago) it needed constant fettling (i.e. expensive set up and servicing) and was hyper fussy about the surface it stood on. So another great real world product from the house of EL. But seriously Those shows do make for a good reality check for the more DIY minded. But I can't remember a time when I’ve not come away with a big Cheshire smile from those things. All good fun Take care

So I very delicately announced I thought theirs was "shyte" Chris about a year ago I went to my Linn dealer to order some turntable supports for my XRay and V2. In the shop at the time they had some £25,000 pound Linn speakers on demo, I could not resist and asked them to play me some music through them - it was the biggest let down ever and I politely told him they were Shyte and the Quad ELS electrostatics were far superior at a fraction of the cost, of course this did not go down to well
