The pads on my DT770's needed replacing. I replaced them and now they sound thin and nasty!!
No bass. All top. Seal isn't good - maybe that's what's going on.
I'm a bit puzzled though because I only changed the pads and they fit fine onto the headphone and around my ears.
Is there some other seal on the cups themselves that I could have broken?
I now have a DT770 with no bass!!! Most odd.

Just realised, I've fitted dt990 pads. I wonder whether they are a different material and so don't form a seal?

Thanks Alex. I think that must be what's going on. The DT770 is letting sounds in like an open headphone so my first thought was that they weren't sealing around the edge or something. They sound really bad. I hope there's no trouble with the fires near you btw. It looks horrific on the news.

Hope this is relevant enough for this thread. The ear pads on my Senn HD280 Pro cans recently began to fall apart so I bought some more from an approved UK source. After putting them in place I noticed an improvement so all good so far . I then looked at the old (original) ear pads and pulled them apart to see how they were constructed. I was surprised to find that the foam rings, although having exactly the same i.d. and o.d., had slightly different heights and the foam was of differing texture, the slightly smaller one being of a more dense texture. What little I know of this subject suggests to me that this is probably not an ideal arrangement - any thoughts? Dave.

I think it just depends what headphone it is, Dave. I've never had such a big change as I have with the DT770. Other headphones haven't seemed quite a drastic but these new pads have made mine go to pot.
What is worrying is that some firms are advertising the same pads I got (black dt990) as suitable for DT770 as well. They're most definitely not.
The sound is thin and toppy and they're no longer closed sounding. In fact, they now have less bass than the K601 and are more toppy!! The physical impedance has changed as well, since they need more drive to get a good volume.
So I guess the same could happen on any headphone, including the Senns.

Well, the pads may have changed the distance of the drivers to eardrums. Closer more bass.

In this case, Chong, it's the density of the material inside since the DT990 and DT770 are the same size pads.
The 770 becomes an 'open' headphone with a disgustingly thin, edgy sound. The seal is so bad that you can hear your thumb and finger rubbing together at the side of your ear. (I use that as one of the tests for closed headphones to work out how well they seal)
I use the K701 pads on the K601 and I now wonder whether that's why I find the K601 quite mellow. I think the K701 pads are affecting them as well, but in this case, I like them.

Ian and Chong, yes I understand what you're saying but surely both (left and right) foam pads on a given set of cans should be identical? - my old ones are not. Even to the touch, being squeezed between finger and thumb, the difference in resistance is obvious To further clarify, I'm not comparing old pads with new pads, I'm comparing the two inner foam rings in the ear pads that were supplied with the cans when new . Dave.

Oh, beg your pardon Dave .... that sounds like poor quality control to me. If one ear pad is more firm or fatter than the other, it could easily affect the sound.
However, if the headphone is designed so that pads have less of an effect on them (some are like that) then it wouldn't be so important; although I would think that the ear to speaker distance would most definitely make a difference.
Sounds like poor quality control to me.

No probs Ian - sometimes I'm not the best at explaining things . Yep, poor quality control is all you can put it down to. Dave.

They're old ones, Mike. I replaced the pads and the wife emptied the rubbish bin so I don't have the old pads!! (That'll teach me) Anyone buying pads for DT 770 - don't buy the gorgeous looking black ones for the dt990. They make the 770 sound disgusting!!

Yes, all these things about material, thickness, etc do affect the sound quite drastically. I myself am surprised just damping the cups with sheep wool changes the sound drastically eventhough the amount I'm talking about is just a small amount.
So if we are happy with any sound don't change anything as the hp is already tuned to a particular sound by the designer.

I'm curious now what effect the 770 pads have on the 990. Anyone tried it?

My old ones were thrown away. However, seeing how much bass I've lost, I would imagine the DT990 would become PHAT. I had no idea just how awful the DT770 could sound by changing pads.

Just to clear the thread up - I replaced the pads with new DT770 ones. (The mean looking grey ones)
Bass has returned and everything is back to normal. I'd thought I'd damaged them.
So there is a difference between DT990 and DT770 pads.
I wish I could try/find those gel ones!!

Never realised pads could make such a difference. Glad everything is 'back to normal'
