Metallica have condescended to put their albums onto Spotify so I had a listen to 'Death Magnetic' today. (Nice title!!)
The opening was SO reminiscent of Black Sabbath's first album with this heartbeat going on before they went into their usual loud, distorted guitar riffs, doubled by bass guitar while the singer ranted on about something.
I guess if you like this stuff, at least you can hear it now from Spotify.
Such an OLD formula though.

I agree Ian. Very well worn territory.
The only album of theirs I like is the "Black" album so real fans would probably want me to burn for that one!
There is only one song since that I like, in a sort of nuts way.
Their single "Until it Sleeps" was remixed by Herman Melville to a fun level.

IIRC death magnetic caused quite a storm amongst fans because A. Rick Rubin produced it and B. Rick Rubin turned the loudness knob up to 11. Or maybe it was 12.
No, I remember now . . . . it was 13 ;D

No, I remember now . . . . it was 13 ;D It might have been worse than that. Look at the DR for the last entry. The album basically has no DR at all. Rubin did the same thing to the last Dixie Chicks album. www.dr.loudness-war.info/index.php?search_artist=metallica&search_album=death+magnetic

This Metallica album is not my favourite. I prefer their older albums. Even at a ridiculous clearance price, I didn't buy one.

Purely my personal opinion, Death Magnetic was without a shadow of a doubt, the worst thing Metallica have ever produced. I've been a fan since I first heard "One" Up to the Black album, all superb, Load and Reload were acceptable, since then, I wont even part with cash for them!
Ian, funny you should mention Sabbath's first album, that's what I'm listening to right now through my loverly Horizon. Sounds superb!

Ian, funny you should mention Sabbath's first album, that's what I'm listening to right now through my loverly Horizon. Sounds superb! Thank goodness - I thought it was just me!! I can't get on with it at all. Sabbath though - I loved that album when it came out. Ozzy just cracks me up and he's so sincere when he sings!! I actually like his solo albums like 'Bark at the Moon' in spite of his continual doubling of his voice. He always sticks a little slushy number into his albums as well - something for Mother eh? The first time I heard their first album - the week it came out, I played it over and over. I wore the record out and the beginning had extra rain for the graveyard. You know, that album has the 'Devil's Interval' on it? It's called the augmented fourth in the music world and was also used in West Side Story as the theme idea for the fighting gangs. If you have a piano - West Side Story - C F# G F# C. (C-F# is the devil's interval) Black Sabbath opening - low C, High C, F#. (The devil's interval in reverse - a trick used by black metal people with words - playing them backwards!!) So, Black Sabbath used a very ancient idea on their first album, nicely linked with Lucifer without anyone realising!!

A nice album in the same vein - Incubus - 'Morning View'. Incubus are slightly more 'intelligent' in the way that they play this stuff. They play some complex patterns and leave space inside the music so it's not just a big fat, hairy, scary sound.
I'm listening to it now - they use the guitars in a funny way..... they have the more responsible guitars playing riffs and for the chorus lines, there are the two guitars on the edge that add the grunge into the mix!!
Nicely recorded too. Very clean sound for this type of music.
