During the summer of 2005 I started down the path of seriously listening to music via headphones. Since I have read a lot of users were satisfied with the Koss Porta Pro and if memory serves me right I listened to one at a meet a while back although I do not recall how it sounded. Recently I saw it on sale at Amazon and picked one up which arrived yesterday. Needless to say this are "old school" style and lack all the fancy stuff of newer designs. They are a lot more comfortable than I expected and the toggle to set the comfort is a very convenient feature. Out of the box they were very nasty sounding. Lack of definition, way too much bass, and the highs were almost missing. I started feeding them music from a radio at pretty significant volume and allowed the cans to cook for about 12 hours. Many indicate that burn in does not work, and they are entitled to their opinion. I can say without a doubt that 12 hours of burn in have made the Porta Pro listenable and I hope that more (say 50-60 hours total) will improve their performance. Any one here have a pair? How do you like them? Below is a link to a few pictures I took. picasaweb.google.com/109437154048011247077/PortaPro?authuser=0&authkey=Gv1sRgCIblj_SaoI-hVw&feat=directlink

Hi Miguel,
Lots of guys here are very happy with theirs.
Speaking for myself I had pretty much the same experience as you except they never reached a nice-listen point for me. I gave mine to my son who loved them.
On that point, he has managed to knacker them. Is there anything similar in sound out there that is more resistant to abuse?

I had a pair 20 years back in New Zealand. Weren't cheap at the time, import duties and all. They had bass and sounded clear so I was happy enough. Wish I'd known about the lifetime guarantee. Remember them most for snagging on my hair

I have a pr of the 25th Anniversary ltd edition Portapro`s, not sure wether they differ at all to the standard ones internals, a few cosmetic external detailing differences are apparent, and i love them. They are used more than any of my other HP`s, are extremely comfortable, with no problems at all after 100`s of hrs use. Mick.

I have two pairs of the standard Porta Pro and also the 25th anniversary ltd. editions..... the limited editions haven't even been out of the box, not quite sure WHY I'm keeping them sitting in a box I'd be as well selling them on. I love my Porta Pro's, a real ballsy sound for little money.... they've been top sellers for so many years for a good reason, they sound great!

Koss KSC75 can fit the pro headband and sound a little better in the higher frequencies and don't cost that much.

I would be interested to know if you detect any SQ differences between these and the originals. Mick.

They've been in the box since I got them Mick, you know there are some weird headphone lovers out there who may be seeking a brand new pair of these and can negotiate a price with me No, haven't listened to them but can only "assume" they wouldn't be too different to the originals? cloth covered cable and a colour change is all I can see..... have you compared yours to the originals? BTW.... what are you supposed to do with that "coin" that comes with them (or medallion, or whatever it is)? Would be interesting to find out how many pairs of these went into circulation.

I'm wrong..... after doing a bit of hunting around:
"Another addition should make an even bigger difference. The Anniversary Edition brings beefier magnets: neodymium iron boron to be precise. This, combined with the “oxygen-free copper voice coils” will make the headphones louder. The very open design of the PortaPros makes it easy to drown out their sound in noisy places, so this is welcome."

You can even get a 'red hot' version. (at a cost) www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B005I49784/ref=noref?ie=UTF8&psc=1&s=electronicsI've had 4 of these over the years and they can be variable in sound quality too. I was really surprised how different an old pair sounded in comparison to a new one. The Anniversary Edition looked great but quite a price for them, so I was put off. I liked what they did to them though.

I bought a pair of these(the standard ones) a few months ago after hearing about them in numerous threads here and on other forums,so I thought they would be worth a try and at about £15 you can't really go wrong. Mine even sounded quite good straight from the box although they got better after a bit of burn-in(about 50 hrs.)sound wise they remind me of a pair of igrado's I owned a few years ago although the porta pro's are much more comfortable and cheaper.

Funny thing with the IGrados was that for me, they seemed curtailed in the treble and yet they use the SR60 drivers, so I hear.
They were ok, but after a while, my ears hurt. The Portas can be adjusted so they don't squeeze as hard and the oblong bits of sponge take the pressure instead of your ears. Very simple but effective.

That was the problem I had with the fit ,after about 10 min use it felt like someone was pinching my ears hard! I didn't have any problems with how they sounded and they sounded very similar to the SR60i I had at the time.

I have listened to a standard pr which sounded fine, but at the time didn`t have mine available to do an A-B comparison Mike. Two prs!! Wow!!. Might have some future investment value who knows. So two medallions, now your talking, could look great if you have a hairy chest to display them on!!!. ;D . Mick.

Hi Mick, No no........ two pairs of the standard porta pro and one limited edition pair. In all seriousness, I wouldn't mind selling the 25th anniversary limited edition pair..... they cost me £59 a few years ago and haven't been out of the box so if anyone's interested there's a brand new pair for sale @ £59

I'd love to own two KOSS medallions, I'd get my nipples pierced and hang them proudly for all to see I feel a bit inadequate with just the "one" hanging from my scrotum and hope it will find a happy home with the new owner. Seriously though, what the "F" are you supposed to do with the KOSS medallion? what a stupid piece of "non useful" metal to add into the package..... I'd rather they had used that metal in the driver housing and maybe thrown in a bit of leather to the headband..... The medallion will NEVER be in anyone's display cabinet (unless they are real sad geeks) so.......... Why waste good money on a medallion that will never be used? If you could "spend" the thing it would be OK but I don't know anybody who will accept payment from the bank of "KOSS"........ "That will be £129.75 sir, how would you like to pay?" Do you accept anniversary KOSS? "NO!" Is the medallion meant to make you feel like you have got something really special?....... I'm proud of my KOSS medallion and will treasure it forever

The Porta Pro's now have about 30 hours of burn in, overall it retains a warm presentation with the top end a bit cleaner and more open as compared with new and with 12 hours of burn in. I think this will end up with SWMBO to be used while she uses an iPad. Although I will wait till they have about 50 hours of burn in.

Isn't that how Mick proudly wears his Falkland medals ? Nah, I think it's a scrotum thing with Mick I believe he was nicknamed "hanging Harris" after he got his medals He was also known as "Scrotum Harris" or "big balls" Harris...... plenty of "real estate" to dangle his bangles from..... I'll get my coat

Mick, I have a good knowledge of Fire Service humour and RAF Police humour - I just hope your service humour is of a similar type, given the flac that you and your medals are taking here . I for one would not have enjoyed flying a bloody great egg beater around in that scenario so any recognition you might have got was well deserved in my book. Nil illegitimum carborundum . Dave.

Dave Perhaps I should make myself perfectly clear. I have nothing but admiration for Mick and his service in the Falklands. Any medals he received are well earned. I also have great admiration for another RG member who served his country in the R.A.F. before moving to the commercial side. Alex

Actually war is the MOST terrible thing to occur between two parties. I have not been involved in war before but after going thru the NS army, I rather not have any of that. It's meant more to support the politicians than the human kind. There are always baddies on both sides of the fence. So I rather not have the medals even if awarded to me in war as I would have killed someone or many to achieve that. That's being inhuman to gain recognition. I rather not have that fame! Anything can be discussed and negotiated. Check out the 2 Clint Eastwood's films telling both sides of the story of that famous island during WW2 which had many killed to have a balance of things. Worth it? It was a mass massacre and canarge on both sides depending who were on the upper hand at the spur of the moment, man! Mind us, the soldiers even don't know each other but ordered by the politicians to kill each other. Sorry for the OT.
