For the past couple of weeks, I've been flying the Blade Quadcopter. It's a weird looking thing, like a spaceship in the air, with 4 propellers. Since it was possible to buy it without batteries and transmitter, that made it cheap to buy from RC Choppers. www.rc-choppers.com/index.cfm/product/blade-mqx-quadcopter-aircraft-only-778
I don't think anywhere else sells it like this. Of course, if you don't have Blade transmitters or batteries, then you have to buy the lot which makes it a bit more.
Anyway, it uses the same batteries as my 120sr which I also like a lot for flying out in the garden and in the park at really long distances so there was no problem powering it up and taking it up for a fly when I got it.
At first, it feels really weird because it has no real 'nose' in order to know which way is forwards. There are two white propellers on the front and two black on the back, but this isn't easily seen outside at longer distances.
I tried it in the front room at first. Straight up into the air, easy. In fact, it easily does a 'scaled' take off and landing. Really slow if you want. It is unbelievably stable in flight. Having 4 props really makes this a stable thing to fly. However, push forwards and it positively rockets off if you're not careful and it won't stop until you make it on the transmitter. So, in the air, it glides around like a CP heli does with the stability of the MCX2.
I took it outside for a 'real' fly. It really moves fast!!! I took it up and sent it off and on turns, it leans right over and skids round corners like a maniac driver. At one point, I lost orientation in the sky because I couldn't see the colour of the blades so I pushed it forwards and watch which way it went. (It was pretty high up)
This is a really fun thing to fly. It has become one of my favourites. It's easy for a beginner (with real care) but as fast as hell and moves like the wind for stunts. It flips as well.
For anyone wanting one that is beyond the cheap and nasty little ones you can get, this is brilliant. Easy to hover, more challenging to fly but not as hard as a CP helicopter.
It would ease a learner from getting off the ground up to CP flight pretty efficiently without going through MCX - MSR - MCP. An excellent start to the hobby with a real challenge built in as well.
