Mike, Get him on a plate before he gets too old and tough ;D . Just jokin' - they're lovely birds aren't they? Have you seen the Golden Pheasants that have settled in the Scilly Isles? Brought over from China I believe yonks ago for the squire's private garden and have gone native - absolutely beautiful. And the native pheasants there, like yours, are so tame they wander through the locals houses and gardens expecting to be fed. A great place for wildlife, bit like your place but bloody warmer and flatter and calmer Dave.

Hi Chris, Are your ducks Mallard? possibly are probably aren't, if you could see them in flight you would get a better idea from the tail, wing and underbelly. You should be able to see the blue wing bar which clearly distinguishes the female Mallard from the many variants within the domesticated form of the mallard duck. From your pic they look like one of the many escapees into the wild of the domesticated duck. Here's a true female Mallard with one of her male escorts.

Definitely not Plover you've got Dunlin, note the black under chest (but no black round neck as in Ringed Plover) also bill is longer and finer and slightly curved in Dunlin. Think I've got some Dunlin and Plover I'll have a look.

I suspect the 'Mallards?' may be Grey Lag Geese? Look a bit too big and plump to me to be Mallards - but I have ocassionally been wrong on such matters ;D .

Hi Chris, I've been delving into ducks and I'm going to stick my neck out and say your ducks are Marbled Duck a rare and threatened bird (so don't eat'em) showing an increase in numbers in South West Spain. If when in flight they show a white underwing then certainly Marbled Duck. Here's a Ringed Plover took his pic at TROON Mike, not sure where he's stuck his beak!!

And this one's from Culzean on the Ayrshire Coast a young Herring Gull, you'll have plenty of them in Caithness.

Well, there's me. Deer in the garden but very shy. Owls a hootin' all the time, driving me nuts. Woodpeckers drumming and green ones laughing which drives me nuts in the day. A dead blue tit outside the window because it was mobbed by 4 Magpies out of its nest - one of the adults too ... not the babies!! A buzzard keeps coming over to attack .... the rabbits in the garden. We also have lesser spotted Woodpeckers which are a bit rare here. Plus the wife and kid and two goldfish.

Oi! they're my ducks and birds Alan! They're from the local beach up here in Caithness Looks like I've confused poor Alan here. All the pictures in my post are Mikes from his post on the previous page. So you need to think Scotland and not Spain I thought Plover might be off due to the beak mainly. I didn't even remember Dunlins! Well done folks

OK Mike another stab at "your Ducks" are there any male ducks in the vicinity? If these are Eider Ducks then the males will be quite obvious where as the females can be a bit variable but certainly look like your ducks. duckexpert.wordpress.com/2011/06/19/down/

Yes, they ARE my ducks... I own the exclusive rights to them... there were a few cormorants down there too but they were too fast to capture in flight (I was too slow with the camera!) I'll go down later and see if I can get a pic of them... there was a pod of killer whales in a harbour about 10 miles from here but I didn't see them.

Mike if you own the "ducks" you could make yourself a nice new Eiderdown. Meanwhile keep on clicking, by the way how did you petrify the lookouts on your lawn?
