Just to make sure that you know about these: a) They are like a monitoring headphone so don't go right up into treble and down into bass. (Not as extended as some) b) Analytical is the best word for them; not musical. c) Small cups means comfort can be an issue. d) They can sound very sibilant and harsh on some material. I use them but only really for checking things, not normally general listening. Having said that, I enjoy them for what they do and they seem to respond well to a good amp. They can be bought new for £55 www.amazon.co.uk/Sony-MDR-V6-Headphones-Wired-Digital/dp/B00001WRSJ/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1339917613&sr=8-1

Thanks for the response with the good info, Rabbit. I hope those MDR V6 on Amazon are genuine! Yes, I've heard a lot about fake V6 headphones. I have a pair that I got from them and they seem right enough to me. I did the checks that are on Youtube. They certainly sound OK if you like that type of sound sig. You can get some good deals. I also had an MDR 7506 which is the same headphone in essence and that came from a different source and was also very cheap. Both sound virtually identical so if one or the other is a copy, they are actually consistent. The Amazon one sounds fine, but it's not what I'd call a 'musical' sounding headphone and can be extremely edgy to say the least. I do wonder if they were fakes whether we could go back to Amazon and complain since they are advertised as Sonys on the site. Amazon are pretty good with problems. I had a problem with a firm abroad in China selling through Amazon UK and I got a really rude reply back from them. I spoke to someone at Amazon about them and sent copies of emails - they removed them!!

Hi Rabbit,
I'm planing to use the MDR V6 straight into my laptop. They will just be headphones for youtube watching and some little music listening.

They're fine for that. In fact I'm using mine now. In case it helps: I checked my Amazon version and it seems fine. The bag is a giveaway. The Sony logo on mine is indeed, white not embossed as it is on copies. and stitching etc looks good. They sell quite a lot cheaper to 'trade' people which is why I think they may be around at good prices from some firms. Just in case someone is selling them second hand (which I doubt) for around the same price you could get a new one!!

I hope you have a 'clean' headphone out. Be careful with the volume...

Are the MDR V6s sensitive?

Yes, they are. I think 64 ohms impedance but point out noise floors extremely well. If your amp hisses, the Sonys will show it. Frequency range is quoted as 5 - 30,000 but I'd take that with a pinch of salt because they don't tell you how much the output drops at each end!! (Quite a lot - ie - it's not as extended as they make out - more like 12 - 15,000 at the top) They have a hump in the FR where 'harshness' can be detected so although they look limited in the treble, they deliver a lot of zing up there. Some love 'em and others hate 'em!! For me, it most definitely depends what I'm doing with them. For analytical stuff - great. As an 'only music' headphone - not for me. I'd prefer something just .... more musical.

Sorted.
I won an older pair that were on ebay. The seller said they are made in Japan, it says it on the headband.

Shane, my V6 doesn't have 'Made in Japan' on the headband.
Have you got it yet? I'm curious how you find it.
If you have any doubts, I'll post pictures for you to compare.

Rabbit, My MDR V6s arrived this morning. I've taken some pics, please take a look. The pads need replacing and there is no foam that covers the drivers. My little mistake, it doesn't say made in Japan on the headband. I'll upload some more soon.

They look kosher to me, Shane. The cups close down, stitching looks neat and tight, not big ruffles on the inside of the headband, the numbers line up with the dashes on the adjustments, so everything looks ok.
How do you find the sound?

Rabbit,
I only use them straight into my lap to for youtube and spotify. No serious listening and nothing special I'm afraid.
They are good headphones, they do have a flat sound. I think they can sound wonderful with stuff that is produced very well.
When I wear them, they do creak a bit. Maybe it's that they are old V6s.
I want to get rid of the old pads and get some foam to cover the drivers....

Shane,
Are they new?
The reason I ask is the pads look different. Mine look matt and yours look shiny and mine has stripes (folds) that go in towards the centre all round the pads. Also, those pads look worn.
You have foam missing from the front of the drivers. Mine are covered.
Also, I just noticed, the top of your headband has a ridge. Mine's smooth. (Where is has 'Studio Monitor' written on it.

Rabbit, Nope, these are definitely not new. I'm guessing they are 8+ years old now. Yes, I've already said the foam is missing from the front drivers. They also came with a bag & limited warranty paper , the Sony logo on the bag is in white. The O, N, Y, is a bit faded. The bag must be the same age as the headphones, they have that old smell to them

Oh ok Shane. That'll account for the pads. Sorry, I didn't realise you bought them without the foam. Given their treble sharpness, it might be a good idea to put the foam back.

Where is the best place to buy the pads & foam, Rabbit?
Cheers.

They're hear, Sahne. However not cheap. As much as you paid for the headphone probably. You have to order two. Don't ask - I have NO idea why earpads are sold singly!!!! www.thomann.de/gb/sony_mdr7506_ohrpolster.htmPersonally, if you like them, I'd still be tempted to buy the Amazon £55 ones and sell those ones on!! (Just in case) Funiily enough, if you can gert past the brightness thing with the 7506, they are very revealing. Here's the other strange thing - tonally, I find them very accurate as well. If you get the volume to focus and get the right amount of presence, the realism of the sounds is quite extraordinary for a cheap headphone. They are very different to the Beyer DT1350 but I still use mine quite a lot. Ian
