I ordered one of these for the laugh www.modelsport.co.uk/losi-micro-t-1-36-scale-rtr-truck-blue-/rc-car-products/27356When it arrived I was quite shocked how small it is, it sits in the palm of my hand. Its also bloody damn fast for such a tiddler, supposed to be about 15mph stock and reports of over 70mph after fully modded Run time with the stock 4.8v 150mah Ni-MH battery is not that great, about 7 or 8 minutes. I'm thinking of going for a Li-po 7.4v 180mah to give a bit more speed and longer run times. The cat loves it, its been chasing it around . I might stick some fake fur on the body shell and spray it with catnip Probably get a small helicopter next, anybody tried one of these ? www.maplin.co.uk/4-channel-indoor-i-r-helicopter-538016 Was thinking of something cheap and simple to fly to get me going

Maplins normally put out quite nice stuff. The heli looks sensible and at a good price. Being a coaxial, it'll be stable to fly in all probability. Looks nice too.
When you think the Blades go out at £60 - £70, there are some cheap alternatives out there. I am fond of the Blades though. They all fly well.

Funny thing, Leo, I always felt that you get what you pay for, but with helis, you can get some good deals. Ian (Toad) has been getting small coaxials that he's very pleased with and they're retailing at really silly money. (Under £20) To me, that seems a real bargain. Today, I received a 2 foot heli that was £60 all in. That's cheaper than a 7 inch Blade MCX!!
There are cheaper out there and the one that Mike and Ian have been flying seems very good value.
Sometimes, with the really cheap ones, the canopy is thin and nasty so if/when you crash, you damage the heli. I think you have to resign yourself to the fact that you are going to crash so it needs to be something that is capable of taking punishment.
If I dropped the 2 foot helicopter from say, head height, it would probably do it some damage with the weight, but the little minis are fine.
The best starter I've had is the one Mike recommended - the MCX2 but it comes at a price. When you first see it, you think 'flimsy' cheap crap. However, it is tougher than it looks and it holds its hover far better than many other cheaper ones, where you end up continuously trimming/fiddling about to get them to hover properly. The MCX2 tends to be set and it basically stays put.

Thanks matey! The main niggle for me is that theres such a huge selection, I didn't want to go through loads just to find something half decent . I remember somebody brought me a mini helicopter a while ago and it was honestly rubbish, it was a total shit to fly No idea what make it was, dragonfly something or other, it wasn't co-axial. Looking at the latest offerings things really seem to have improved and looking at the various vid footage they look to be miles more stable. I'll have a look at the MCX thread, being able to take a few crashes would be handy Maplins do have quite a selection, their only 10 mins away from me too. They also had one with a built in camera on the front

Yeah it's slightly different. no fake tail rotor, different blades etc. There are lots of Apache heli models. It only has 3.5 stars rating too I just noticed the RRP of the play.com one is 40 quid so for £17 shipped it's a real bargain.

This RRP thing is a farce Ian... they can basically quote any old "RRP" to make the actual price seem good

BTW Leo, I would (personally) go for an e-flite Blade MCX2... expensive, yes, but you will still be flying it when all the Maplins specials have bitten the dust

I have to admit, I agree with Mike. The Blades are damned good. All of the ones I have fly really well and you don't really think about it until you try other types.
I like them so much, I've even pre-ordered a flybarless heli before even knowing too much about it, because I do honestly feel that Blade are pretty trustworthy and it won't be a nasty heli!!

BTW Leo, I would (personally) go for an e-flite Blade MCX2... expensive, yes, but you will still be flying it when all the Maplins specials have bitten the dust I think the 4 or 5 Apaches you could buy for the cost of the MCX2 would last longer personally PS Here are some quotes from the reviews: "I bought this as a present and do not want to give it away. I have some experience of other RC helicopters but this thing is a completely different experience. Highly stable and controllable. I would recommend this produce even if it was twice the price." "This is an absolute bargain, so stable and easy to fly, very precise. I would recommend anyone who hasn't tryed RC Heli's before to buy this one!" "What are you waiting for - go ahead and buy this amazing little helicopter. Have had numerous r/c helicopters but none come even close to this one with regard to ease of flight and controls reactions. Very easy to use and you feel like an expert in no time. Absolute super piece of kit." "if you already have an RC Helicopter, scrap it and buy this, if you haven't got one, buy this one now." "Have had it 4 days now and wow what a advance in tech in the last two years, can now land this on a upturned cup!" 5 star rating average out of 55 reviews... I rest my case
