She would look good to me wearing a bin liner Ian, always thought she was beautiful, infact sex on legs with a unique and wonderful singing voice. Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

Actually Mick, I think she looks better now than she did when she was young. She could sing about 'washing machines' to me as well, all day but that early screeching that she did when she was younger would have done my 'ead in. She's quite a recluse nowadays.

Must admit Ian, I actually prefer her later stuff, say from The Dreaming onwards. Not to say I dislike the early stuff, just prefer the later. Jeff

I agree Ian, she has matured nicely, just listening to her latest offering, its certainly different, but i`m thinking its a grower, probably end up listening to it all the while.
I also think Coldplay latest (Mylo Xyloto, can anyone pronounce the second word!!) is excellent, if not the best recording i have ever heard.
Mick.

Mick,
On Kate's new one I can confirm it's a grower. I'm slowly but surely getting to really like it. Even the daft 50 words for snow track.
On Coldplay, hmmm . . ., I'm not so sure. I'm a big Coldplay fan and saw them at Hampden a couple of years ago and they are absolutely great live. I've got all the albums obviously but I'm struggling with this one. I'm still trying to find the best headphone out of my modest armoury to listen to it because, as you rightly say, the recording is not really very good quality. Strange, the first 4 , while not 'audiophile quality' were absolutely fine.

@ Ian,
Ian, if you listen to this interview with Ken Bruce she talks about the reasons for going back to Red Shoes. Check out from 01:50 to 02:55. I think it shows she is a hi-fi type and is concerned about quality control.
And wasn't she one of the first people to seriously use a Fairlight?
Check out from 04:30 to 05:35.
Of course I'm completely biased . . .

Yes, I can see that!!! I think her production team have let her down.
Actually, the album is ok. It's a 'grower' but I still struggle with the strange lyrics when she takes the form of something else. (Like a snowflake and then starts telling you what she sees)
I see trees. I see horses.... and I'm thinking, so what?
I like how her voice has changed actually. It's gone down or they've done something to the recording.
Actually, those kinds of lyrics are kind of what we hear from Bkork but I find her stuff musically more intricate than the minimalist and sometimes stark stuff on this album. The chords on that first track are almost crude parallel block chords in places and I find it a bit basic, I guess. But then the barrenness of snow and a white landscape is perhaps being reflected in the sound of the music which I must admit, if you imagine that you're a snowflake falling (and talking to yourself on the way down) the sound of the music is almost cinematic and would work extremely well with a film clip.
I guess I'm looking for emotion rather than descriptive work. There is one point when she kind of lets rip and I just feel ... at last - real emotion rather than this emotion planted onto a snowflake!!
Her mate Peter Gabriel does it a lot better imo.
Thanks Mick, I'll look into the Coldplay album. The last album you brought up like that, I absolutely loved.

Just countering the negative vibes here...
I *love* her early work. Admittedly, the lyrics can be a bit girlish at times, but that doesn't bother me at all. Every time there's a new wave of Kate's work (as in 'a new album') it triggers me to revisit (repeatedly) all of her work and it gives me a warm feeling for weeks.
Her early LP's also have the strength (for me, that's personal) to bring back youth memories (aged 15 to 18). She's the only artist that i love now every bit as much as I did back then.
I only wish that her first 3 LP's would be (well) remastered some day and sold as better sounding versions. I don't know how the original LP's sounded, but I do know how the CD's sound.

I have now compared the LP of "The kick inside" to a Flac of the CD.
IMHO the LP is far the better listen. I have a few other albums on both LP and and CD and this is certainly not always the case.

. I think (personal choice) that musically its very good Ian, but mine was a download from iTunes ( yes i know, never learn will i!!), along with Snow Patrols (Fallen Empires) another IMPO very good album, spoilt by the quality of download, or possibly original recording, could be either or both. Dont even ask about the quailty of Lana del Ray`s single (Video games)+b side (Blue jeans), wonderful songs totally destroyed by the distortion. Mick.

Interesting interview . . .
I always forget how 'un-starry' and 'un-celeby' and how funny she is and then I hear an interview and remember again one of the reasons why I love her . . .
Roll on the hinted at next album . . .

I knew this would happen Jeff, cant stop playing her latest offering now, almost forgotten how good she was, the whole album is pretty damn good, especially in HD She takes me back to happy and very sad times in my past, strange what good music can do to your senses. Time for a smoke Mick.

I know exactly what you mean Mick, I've been at work tonight and I'm just finishing now and for the past five and a bit hours I've had the same little bit from 'Snowflake' running round in my head - the bit where she sings the line "I'll find you . . ." I'm beginning to think this album is almost as good as Aerial. Funny how music can instantly take you back to times in your life, some happy, some sad. Sometimes you don't even realise that you have associated a piece of music with a time or a situation till long afterwards when you hear the music again and suddenly it all comes flooding back. Sometimes music can be so powerful . . . Going home now to listen to Snowflake before bed, Jeff

Sounds like we have much in common Jeff!! Snowflake is just soooooo different and bl""dy awesome. Wild Man is i think, referring to Yete or the abominable snowman that is supposed to inhabit the Himalayan region of Nepal. Who else would think of that as a possible subject!!. Snowed in at Wheeler Street, mesmerising, stunning. Loving it, time for another smoke.

Wild Man is i think, referring to Yete or the abominable snowman that is supposed to inhabit the Himalayan region of Nepal. Who else would think of that as a possible subject!!. Exactly Mick - nobody else. She is absolutely and completely unique. "Snowed in", about two lovers who keep meeting down through time. To me I interpret as when you have truly found the one you will be with for the rest of your life, you often feel as if you've known them all your life. But sometimes the feeling is so strong you feel as if you've known them not just in this life but in past lives too . . . . She has more talent in her left pinky than every dead-eyed, pop clone who ever has or ever will appear on X-factor/pop idol/etc., etc.Jeff

Now that you guys are talking about talent... Of course, I agree with the above, allthough the left pinkie comparision might be slightly exagerated (but not if compared to the run-of-the-mill X-factor talent).
I wonder what the answer of all you Kate fans is to the next few questions:
What do you think about the comparisions of recent and older talent that got compared to and even named 'the next Kate Bush'? I could think of Bjork, Tori Amos and there's also a younger version that recently popped up, can't remember her name. IMO, there's no comparision. Allthough I do like Tori Amos and Bjork, they all are veratile, talented, active long enough to be proven timeless, their music is something else and i don't think how it can/should be compared to Kate's Music.
Next: what do you think is comparable talent in terms of quality, irrespective of the music style. Besides the above mentioned ladies, I would definitely add Jeff Buckley (it's a pity he died so early), Nina Simone and Sting. If i think hard i might be able to add e few others.
Cheers, Marc

Sorry for my absence, I am just playing the album.
I am playing it through the speakers (JBL Duet II's for now!). Sounds good...
Birdy, hmmm interesting but the secret to Kate Bush for me is her creative approach to the use of telling and singing stories and/or impressions. Few artists come close or achieve the same. Missy Elliot, the XX, Pink Floyd, King Crimson, Björk among others have that fascinating aspect that keeps me listening. King Crimson even frightened me. Of course Jeff Buckley...
Coldplay, sorry but for the sole reason of ... up the sound quality of their albums I am very wary regarding their work. Thing is, a band that makes an album like "A Rush Of Blood To The Head" just can't be ignored. Too bad they are chasing U2.
I guess I will find consolation in Elbow as long as that band will keep its lyrical qualities, both in lyrics and music. "The Loneliness Of A Tower Crane Driver" is one of the masterpieces of this time...

@ Mick, Marc & Ruben, guys, if you are into Kate Bush you really should have a go at David Sylvian if you are looking for beautiful, mesmerising melodies, which can take you away from this world for a few minutes. He has suberb songcraft and an amazing voice. Get onto youtube and listen to 'Wanderlust' or 'Some Kind of Fool' or 'I Surrender', 'When Poets Dreamed of Angels' etc., etc. If you like what you hear p.m. me
