Have you listened to Director's cut yet? As usual, needs some time to adjust the mind and mood. The only album that hit me from the first listen and didn't have to grrow on me was Aerial.

Yes, really liked almost all of Director's Cut except the computer voice on 'Deeper Understanding'. I much preferred the original computer voice and feel this wastes the track for me slightly. But I would forgive her anything. If she released an album where she read out the phone book I would buy it I loved all the rest of the re-mixed tracks. The bass on 'Song of Soloman' and 'Sensual World' is amazing. S-o-o-o d-e-e-e-p Aerial is probably my favourite album especially the 'Sky of Honey' - the last two tracks, Aerial and Nocturne IIRC just bliss me out. The guitar solo always reminds me of Dave Gilmour. Genius is such an over-used term, but I truly think she is. I heard on the radio today she has been making albums for over 40 years Jeff

Mind you, Director's Cut is not just a remix. She re-recorded many tracks, mixing new with original.
I have only one major regret WRT Kate's music: the quality of The Kick Inside up 'till Never For Ever. The music is bliss but the recording or mixing or whatever resulting in the end result is poo.
I remember being ecstatic while listing to her music 20 years ago on compact cassette. I also remember my first big disappointment when taking the early CD's to a store for a listen on a decent system.
There's also obvious clipping on Aerial, but luckily I've found the 24bit version without these artifacts.
In Aerial I'm most impressed by Sunset. Jazzy transforming into flamenco, makes me smile ear to ear every single time.
Cheers, Marc

Yes I know - I wonder why. She normally takes care to record things well , though I hear what you're saying about Aerial. BTW, can you give me more details about the 24 bit version? Where you bought it, serial number etc?? I would buy it in a heartbeat. I remember being ecstatic while listing to her music 20 years ago on compact cassette. I also remember my first big disappointment when taking the early CD's to a store for a listen on a decent system. I mentioned in another thread ages ago that my first taste of real hi-fi was listening to Running up that hill on an Uncle's system comprising Linn Sondek, Naim amps and can't remember the speakers, but the sound was incredible. I fell in love that day and have 'been faithful to her ever since'. In Aerial I'm most impressed by Sunset. Jazzy transforming into flamenco, makes me smile ear to ear every single time. When I tell people one of my favourite albums of all time has the vocalist doing bird impressions, reciting Pi to god knows how many places and laughing in the style of a bird - they look at me as if i'm a nutter Jeff

Is "Director's Cut" worth it? I am considering to buy her complete discography eventually...

Absolutely As Marc says she not only re-mixed some of the tracks but re-recorded them as well including the vocals. You can tell. Her voice is lower and possibly even sexier (hard to imagine I know ) Jeff

I am going for the originals first. If I can find the 24 bits remasters I will get them.

I am going for the originals first. If I can find the 24 bits remasters I will get them. funk 1969 and Marc After reading this I found a 24/96 .flac DL of "Aerial"with UseNeXt. "Sunset"sounds nice, but SF9s Spectrum Analysis using Blackman Harris in SF9 suggests that it is only upsampled from 16/44.1. That most likely explains why I thought it sounded nice, but not great. There have been quite a few complaints recently in Computer Audiophile about material that HD Tracks is selling, has only been upsampled due to what appears to be a "brickwall filter" at 22KHZ. If you can, find a way to check one of these tracks from these HD DLs in a sound editing program , such as the Freeware program Audacity before purchasing the whole DL, or search for reports in forums such as C.A. where they may have already been checked out. You may be telling the truth Alex, no doubt, but the fact alone that the 24bit version does not clip is worth it.

I'm pretty sure I haven't even heard Aeriel yet! I must put that right. I only have "The Kick Inside", "Never For Ever" and "Hounds of Love" so plenty of catching to do. I did hear some of "The Red Shoes" when it came out but never got any further with it. She definitely requires patience and a tuning-in period before you can truly enjoy.

Marc There is no obvious clipping, that's for sure. Alex Alex, i'm not sure, but i don't think the clipping was on Sunset, there are other tracks with deep bass, that's where the clipping is. And definately not on the 24bit version only on 16/44.1 CD.

If you like Kate, you MUST have The Dreaming. Can't choose which album I like best, I'm only sure I slighthly dislike The Red Shoes (did I really say that? ). Cheers, Marc

My favourite Kate Bush material (so far) is the "9th Wave" section from "Hounds of Love". Eery, atmospheric, scary. "Watching You Without Me" gets me close to tears every time I listen to it.

Derek Oh Yes, especially Under Ice and Hello Earth. I know exactly what you mean. Then again her young, extremely flexible voice on TKI, LH and NFE is breathtaking. The Dreaming is so insanely groundbreaking and violently insane, Aerial is so rich of textures, wonderful arrangements and lovely melodies... Lucky we can listen to all and don't have to choose.

I know exactly what you mean Under Ice is such an eery, creepy track, I get goosebumps every time she sings "Theres something - moving under (under the ice, moving, under ice, through water, trying to, ( it's me), get out, of the cold water. ( it's me), something, ( it's me), someone help them ( it's me). LOVE IT !!! Off to listen to Aerial

I have been listening regulary to 50 words since I got it and after the usual, initial thoughts of "Mmmm, not sure about this . . . " I am beginning to really like it. I can see me eventually loving this album. However, one thing is bugging me. On the second track 'Lake Tahoe' at around 6.02 there appears to be a problem. A few seconds before this, some cello's have begun a repeating refrain and at 6.02 as the cello is playing there appears to be some quite noticeable distortion just for a split second and only on the cello. Has anyone else noticed this? I first thought 'dust on the c.d.' and have checked it visually - it's spotless (should be, it's brand new). I cleaned it anyway. I then downloaded that track from a few different sites and listened in wav, flac and mp3 at 320 - and they all have this distortion at 6.02 I had it pre-ordered from Amazon and so I imagine I would have received a copy from the first batch. Could it be a bad batch? Whats going on? I don't have software to check it visually, does anyone else? Jeff

Disappointing, isn't it? I think one of the tracks further down is distorted from beginning to end because it's 'over-bassed'. Can't tell you from the top of my head which one, but will have a listen this evening.

I've just had another listen on my basic work set up. I do remember suspecting distortion on the recording somewhere (much like Marc) but not at the point stated.
I can't say for sure until I get home to the better set up BUT; to me that sounds like the choralists humming the refrain?
I'll have to confirm...

Chris, Yes the choralists are in there as well but I think it's a cello that I hear being distorted - anyhoo, cello or voices, there definitely seems to be distortion. As Marc says, it's disappointing. I thought the bass on Director's Cut was a bit over the top and can only listen to it on my 'leanest' headphones, the ones with the least bass. Its the same on this album and listening to it on my main system ( valve C.D. feeding valve amp), the bass is almost overpowering. If I use the 'Direct' output on my CDP then it is slightly better balanced. I assume the producer or engineer is responsible for the amount of bass present but I find it hard to believe Kate Bush (or any other serious artist) would allow the release of an album with obvious distortion. I think I've got a bad C.D. and will send it back to Amazon for a replacement. Jeff
