Frans, I just re-cabled my new SHP-9000 phones with a 5ft. Cardas cable that I made, and the SQ now is very similar to that of with my HD-650 Senns, but with a remarkably wider sound stage. The sound is more transparent with fine rendition of HF without too much sibilance, and an excellent midrange. The slightly wider bass quality that was present with the original stock 2 meter cable is now gone, and the bass is now nice and tight without any audible loss. Thanks again for recommending this sleeper gem! Cheers! Israel Hi Isreal... Beautiful cans you have there... ;-) I would like to build my own cable too for my SHP9000... Wanted to know how you managed the 'special' 2.5mm jack...? I couldn't find anything close to it from where I live... ;-( Boon

Is it the one on Marktplaats ?
I still like mine. Very open and wide sounding. They've become almost impossible to get new. The L1 came in it's place.

Yep, I am having the terrible thought of finding a headphone that sounds as open as the K500 with bass. My old (which Claus has now) HP1000 sounded so close to the K240 DF that I had a hard time choosing between the two.
If the SHP9000 is the answer I have to consider selling the K500s. Headphones...

I have been away for a while, and just now trying to catch up. Regarding the 2.5mm jack: I simply reamed out the locking bayonet receptacle on the left phone, and converted it to a friction-fit receptacle. I used a gold-plated 2.5mm stereo plug for the purpose, and made sure that the receptacle is almost too tight in order to make the friction-fit firm enough. You can find a reasonably priced gold plated 2.5mm stereo plug at eBay. Just do a search, and you should come up with many choices. I hope this helps, and it is not too tardy. All the Best! Israel

No, if the SHP9000 won't do it I might consider selling the K500s, SHP9000 and just being content with the HD250 II, Monitor 10 and SHP5401.
The SHP5401 is a cheap semi-open discontinued headphone made by Philips which I call a budget miracle. Either way I have too many headphones (among others) again so I have to clean up.

I have been on the look out for a good pair of cheapish headphones and thought these might do the job.I've now had them for a few days,I got the ones on amazon, thanks for the recommendation Solderdude. About the only fault I can find with them is the long cable,I need a short cable for portable use so I think I've found my first DIY project so can anybody recommend a cheap but good quality cable and where I can get it in the UK. Thanks .

This doesn't answer your question really, but my take on this would be to consider buying a new plug, shorten the existing lead to whatever length is perfect for you.. and solder the new plug on. Add a line socket to the previously chopped off lead.. and you have instant reversal for when / if you want a longer lead? Derek

I was looking online yesterday for the bits to make a new shorter cable and I came across some Shure headphone cables,a 2.5m straight cable and a 1.5 to 3 m curly cable both about £17,the cable came this morning and it fits no problem, sounds as good as the original cable and no soldering involved also not costing much more than a couple of decent plugs and 2m of cable.

Do you like the sonic presentation of the SHP9000?
I like it enough to keep it for a while. If anything it sounds like a more sensitive and open HD250 II with 'a bit' more bass. Not one bass line is escaping my hearing ;-)

I do like them, although I must admit I'm only using them to listen to the TV and some occasional use direct from my iphone/ipod late at night but I am using them more than I expected even though I've plenty of more expensive hp for more "serious"listening only thing is I'm not sure whether this is due to the sound quality or the comfort.

Both, Philips knows how to make headphones sound good/pleasant and the comfort of the SHP9000 is very nice. The Philips almost feels as light as a the older AKG headphones like the K400 and K500.
A headphone amplifier can make a more than a subtle difference as long as the output impedance isn't too high.

I think weight wise they're about the same as my K601 although I think the comfort has a lot to do with the pad shape and the material that covers them. I hav'nt had much of a chance to try them on my HP amps(a Neco Bossfet and a Little dot 3)I'm still running in my new K550 but I will soon.

I just bought two pairs of these..... one pair from ebay for £20 and the other from another place for £9.99..... both look immaculate! First impressions are very good, I'll come back once I've had a good session with them I've ordered a pair of these so can try the leather pads against the stock pads cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=160767794122&ssPageName=ADME:L:OC:GB:3160Thanks for the steer towards these Frans.... you can pick them up pretty cheaply (£29.99 for two pairs!!) so well worth a punt..... Always good to have two pairs when comparing tweaks such as new pads etc...... Pictures to follow
