They are indeed not much more expensive than clip+ (about GBP10) The one sold is the Fuze +

hmmmm...... well, I bought the Fuze "+" 8GB (£46.99) along with their special offer (today's offer at play.com) Sandisk 16GB Micro SD SDHC memory card for £13.99 shipped (was £55 apparantly) so looking forward to it. Downloaded EAC a couple of hours ago and have got the grasp of it..... Create music folder, in that folder create name of Artist folders, in those folders create name of album folders..... when burning a particular album create it in the name of album folder correct? Have set it to rip in flac (average album about 500mb) and have worked out how to obtain track listings and album art etc. Is it worth ripping in Flac for the Fuze? 8GB plus 16GB equals = 24GB so that's about 48 albums on the Fuze at any one time..... WAY more than enough for me! I cannot forsee a time when I will need more than 48 albums about my person... when I go on holiday I generally have better things to do than listen to pre recorded music, when I'm on the bus I talk to people (usually the driver these days, a very interesting bloke) and when I'm out and about generally like having my senses about me PLUS I don't think it's cool for a 50 year old man to be walking about the streets looking like a gormless teenager with earphones plugged in (much the same as these 70 year old guys who wear jeans and trainers.... god god, they look ridiculous).... IMO our generation needs to keep the art of conversation ALIVE and isolating ourselves from fellow humans by means of "on the move" music is not a good example to set. Appears I have answered my own question! 48 albums in my pocket will be MORE than enough so FLAC it is! I must admit, I have recently started to carry a "man bag" about with me..... it started off when I was telling Sam (in the bike shop) about the Korg Kaossilator, he said he would like to have a play with it so I took into town with me in the "man bag" along with the matching Banzai Thunder amp and Senn HD-25/1 'phones...... There are a lot of youths that hang out in the bike shop (helping / learning from Sam) and they thought the Kaossilator was cool.... they thought the amp was cool and they thought the headphones were even COOLER One of them gave me a shot of his MP3 player and I just couldn't BELIEVE what I was listening to! The actual "music" wasn't too bad (these are intelligent, well behaved, good mannered "youth" ) but, my god, the compression was insane.... I think more enjoyment would be had from listening to a £3.99 FM radio Stock "buds" etc....... to ME it sounded f@ckin' awful but I said "not bad at all"...... Next time I went in I took along the ipod (30GB 5th generation), NECO "Water Towers" and the Senn HD-25/1 and let them listen to some YELLO in lossles format. "ALL" of them said "WOW! what group is that? they sound so clear!" I explained about compression etc. and that the particular track they had been listening to "the race" was produced in the 1980's I am now being bombarded with questions in town and Sam reckons I should start an audio group up in Town this Autumn.... he runs a helicopter club (remote control indoor helicopters) and I am going to join that (ALL of the members are 40 PLUS! )..... I think I may well do it, it's great to talk with these young blokes (no girls in the bike shop yet!) and they are SO interested, now that they have heard just how good music can be reproduced. I have zero time for "youth" that think they know it all and think that anybody over the age of 25 is an idiot and think the world owes them a living.... (I would have a VERY hard time controlling my limbs in an inner city.... my boot would be lodged in so many arses ) I'm more than happy to spread the word and am seriously contemplating signing up to share my experience (I hate the "teach" word) with these youngsters...... I hope it will be a two way street and I can learn from them too. Part 6 will be "OK grasshopper, you now know that lossless is the only way to go.... it is time to visit the Grotto" Soooo... I am building my armoury up for the Autumn and will be doing a bit of studying myself Mike.

Good for you Mike. That sounds really good. Start with mp3 and improving the quality of rips. Then onto amps and improving dynamics. Solid state/valve technology. Higher end headphones. They'll start eating corn next ......... I might join quietly myself ...... Sounds like a lot of fun actually. The Sansas are really good sounding. I'm using wavs since they can be shared with Mini Ape. (as well as mp3) Don't forget to set the Sansa on 'World' and not 'European' settings since the volume is awful on European. Once you get a good volume, the Sansa really produces a mellow, warm digital sound as far as I'm concerned. (As opposed to that edgy, toppy sound that you can get) Terrific straight into the Portapro or HD25 with no amp. It produces a lot of volume as well. One of this year's best gadgets for me!!! (Although it's been around ages.) Ian

Well, this ones' fine and the sound with Senn ie8 is ridiculously good. The bass level is PHATT and clarity and punch are way above the price. £35 is a giveaway price for this quality of sound.
Think about the quality you'd get from £35 Sansa and £17 superlux headphone. Total £52 and a sound that is top notch.
Then the expandability into amps.... say a Pocket Amp 2.
It's a bargain.
I'm going away next week and to think - all I'm taking is the Sansa with a 32 gig card = 40 gigs of music (and a radio) with Senn ie8 (OK they're expensive). That's perfectly ok for me.
And it's so small, it'll be strapped to my wrist like a watch.

One thing, as a Clip Plus owner codecs matter. I have switched completely to FLAC and the more data you intend to keep of your favourite music the shorter the battery life gets.
I am considering a second Clip Plus or a DAP with similar functionality and longer battery life...

Yes, that's common to most DAPs. As long as I get a day from it, I'm fine. Just leave it overnight and you're off again. I use a wall charger, not the computer. I also have a car charger if I'm on the move. Mind you, the Ipod Touch isn't that much better on high res. The Classic is OK. I use WAV - I'm always worried that FLAC will become defunct and so players will stop playing it so if you no longer have the CD's, you're stuffed. 40 gigs of wave is ok for me. Mind you, transferring music takes a while. Mine's in a little rubber suit now. Ian

OK,
Here's my plan;
Get the : -
Fuze or Fuze+ (8GB) 16GB microSDHC card Wall plug charger Fiio E11 Porta Pro
This will be intended for the wife who is VERY fussy, though she likes the look of said bits.
If she can't get on with it, shift it on to the daughter and try again!
What say yee?
Any holes in the above setup?

You'd need a LOD for the Fuze. Since the Fuze LO has DC on it, LODs need to have DC blocking caps in them, which could potentially degrade the sound on a cheaper LOD (if you're into that kind of thing ) For that rig, though, any LOD would probably work fine. There's a FiiO Fuze LOD, though I forget the model. Think it's an L4. -JoetheArachnid

OK Joe you got me. What is a LOD? I cannot look it up as I am stuck on my sons school-netbook, which will not allow google-not-spain to run. Chris ps Line Out Dooh-dah? ;D Oh! nearly right Dock! I thought the fuze had no dedicated line out and used only the HP out? Now Iam really confused

@ CJ
You might want to hold off on the E11, if she finds the volume enough you don't need one. The HP out is very good on the Fuze(+)/clip+
The Fuze+ does not have an LOD b.t.w., only the older Fuze has (with the scroll wheel). The Fuze+ only has mini USB for power supply and you need to use the HP out.
Never used the LOD on the Fuze as you can't run it on external power and have LO (or you need an expensive cable or dock) The HP out is very useable as a line out but a little low in output voltage.

Chris, as Frans said, the output on them is quite high and you could easily drive the Portapro with a Fuze or Clip. (That would save you some money)
I'd also suggest a 32gig card so you have room for high quality files on it.
The clip sees the 32 gig card so I imagine the Fuze will too.
Also, a rubber cover? Keeps the dust and fingerprints away.
I love the clip to death. It's a great sound straight into the Portapro. Into the Senn ie8 - it is astounding.

All ordered! White Sansa Fuze+ 8GB Black "wallet" with micro sd card slots 16GB micro sd cards x2 Koss Porta Pros I was a little limited on what I could get at a good price, many sellers on Amazon, for example, won't send to Spain. So I went for the best package that I could have delivered here without paying over the odds. Thanks for all the advice and as I'll be the one loading it up I'll get first listen

If anyone else is looking at these I found the Fuze original 8GB like Frans has at a decent price. I was tempted but went for the plus in the end.

You're in for a treat Chris. You'll become a ripaholic and start to take an unnatural interest in very cheap gear like Portapros at first and suddenly, you'll go off at the deep end and get a Senn ie8 and 5 minutes later, you'll sit down and think to yourself, 'What have I done?' That much money on a poxy iem. Then when you hear it .......... OMG it's gooooooood. A good iem extracts a lot from even mp3. How's this for odd behaviour. I like my HD681b's so much that I cleaned them up with WD40 and they really look the business now with their new pads and shiny exterior. Pure class for £17!!! (plus pads) Ian

Be sure to use a mild detergent to get rid of the surface WD-40 and then go over with a damp cloth..... we don't want your ears flaring up with dermatitis

You know, the hd681 becomes a real stunner in the wet gloss look.
My skin is like a rhino's. I've done it for years. 

My Fuze + arrived today and wouldn't respond (DOA) so first impressions are not too good.... I will stick with it and have asked play.com for a replacement (rather than a refund) so will report back when it arrives and (hopefully) works

What a bugger. I reckon M put the bogies on it.
I don't think you can do anything about the battery Colt. I don't mind a shorter life because it sees the day out and then just charges overnight so there's no 'shall I or shan't I charge it' feeling. Just plug in at night and forget.
Big files do take more power. Same on IPod. I just prefer the sound of the Clip. It has more weight than the IPod although it's obviously not as versatile as a Touch. It's just the sound I like.
