Are the ECC85 & E88CC/ECC88 swappable?
Or will doing so possibly shorten the life of my equipment?

ECC85 is 6.3V/435mA, ECC88 is 6.3V 365mA. Also the gain and recommended anode voltage is different so they might not set properly in some amps.
so in some amps you can perhaps swap them around within limits. a direct replacement it is not.
Mike knows more about this tube stuff and in which amps you can stick which tube.

You won't fit one inside the X-10D enclosure but IF you want supreme performance fron the X-10D you will not go far wrong fitting a pair of Russian 6H6N Actually, they may well fit (physically) in an X-10D you would have to try them for size.... they are more commonly known as 6N6P and can be had VERY cheaply from ebay...... I would stick with the E88CC / ECC88 family and would certainly NOT roll an ECC85 into the X-10D.... There is no need to look "outside" the E88CC / E88CC / 6DJ8 / 6922 family with the X-10D, there will be something to suit your requirements within that family..... just make sure that the valves (tubes) are 100% NEW (genuine NOS).... this is more important than a "brand name" Mike.

Mike, do you mean like these - cgi.ebay.co.uk/ECC99-E182CC-6N6P-Tube-ONE-More-NOS-/180637784643?pt=Vintage_Electronics_R2&hash=item2a0ed9da43
