That will please Javier Alex, He sent me the link for the Oppo BDP95 a few weeks back, as i am looking for a sabre based dac, and i must say it certainly looks a nice unit with very good specs, in fact it does too much for my requirements, so i am being drawn towards the Audiolab 8200DQ www.audioaffair.co.uk/Audiolab-8200DQ-DAC/Pre-Amp/product_5026 which is also cheaper. Mick.

Heh, heh, heh, I'm still eyeing an Esoteric universal player for the main system after all these media player stuff. Why not an Oppo BDP 95 with a Sabre DAC. One of our Sydney members now has one, and it apparently is MUCH better than his Marantz SA11 for CD playback, as well as doing BluRay and the rest, and even capable of play from a USB stick. Just get paid for some of that unpaid overtime and you could get one . Yes, that can also be a consideration as does the Cambridge BD650 (I think) which I had brought up at Rockgrotto last time. Actually, I don't need a Sabre in a player as I'm also eyeing for a Sabre Dac as mentioned last time. The Esoteric is, well, more esoteric and exotic than any others in consideration. See for ourselves the mechanism that holds the disc here from the Esoteric. I think it's even better than the CD Pro. The best in fact of all the HIGHEND players. Just name any and compare it with the Esoteric on the transport mechanism and say goodbye to the rest. Reference: www.esoteric.jp/technology/vrdsneo/indexe.html

Chong Incidentally, he also prefers the Oppo BDP95 over his 24/192 capable W4S. Alex

Chong Incidentally, he also prefers the Oppo BDP95 over his 24/192 capable W4S. Alex As it is, the media player softwares have still not catch up to the sofistication of the "brick and mortar physical players" yet. I remember the Ipod enabled Wadia 170 being highly praised in the hifi magazines as to be indistinguishable from the cd players. We compared it with many cd players and the Wadia 170 was rated last in the order when we had a pow wow eons ago.

Why go to all that bother with a CD tray, when you can do this?

Why go to all that bother with a CD tray, when you can do this? Actually, once the cd got clamped, the tray is already out of the equation. I like the simplicity and the KISS approach by going trayless but when top loading, especially when we have to put the equipments in a rack, is not possible, the tray will come in handy.

Here's a funny thing: was just doing my between-7-to-10-days software update of the Mini APE (because it stops booting at the copyright screen) and did not follow the instructions properly (by mistake). I had the APE plugged in to my PC via the USB (B) and then turned it on (the instructions say to do this the other way round) and, lo and behold, the APE turned on properly, without my having to go through the software update procedure (i.e., running the batch file).
Now, in fact, since it was connected to the PC anyway, I decided to turn it off and start again, following the correct procedure, and ran the batch file and updated the software, but it shows there's another way of getting the APE to start up properly, if it stalls on the copyright screen.
Those of you who were having problems running the software update might want to give this a go.

Hi,
I am wondering where I can got a copy of the latest update software for the mini APE. I got mine about 2 months back. Being getting dropouts frequently especially playing hirez files. Thanks in advance.
Regards
Brian

The best way is to email Candy directly on
sales@hifidiy.net
Make sure your USB pen and/or SD cards are up to the job. If they are too slow you WILL get drop outs. Most especially with hi res files.
The SD cards most folks are having success with are the SDHC class 10 type. For USB pen you need fast USB2 or USB3 standard like the Corsair GT or GTR.

Thanks for the reply. I will email Candy for the latest firmware. By the way I was using the transcend class 10 sd card when the drop outs happened.

My unit at work suffered its first, "I'm not doing anything so there" attack yesterday. No big deal, reset the unit, popped the firmware back on and all seems well. The weird thing was, when I got home and went to use the other one there it did exactly same Do these naughty mini apes communicate? EEE EEE EEE, OOH OOH OOH , AHH AHH AHH. My Miniape is back in China and I'm awaiting one of the new ones. First rate comms from Candy.
In the meantime I'm back to CD. Ended up with a couple of Sony ES Players, a 227 & X55 (both with Trichord digital boards) and a a Denon 1700. All of them have the Sony KSS121 mech which operates with magnetic rails. The Denon cost me £10 and is as good as the Meridian 500 I had been using. There are no spares for the KSS based players but they are so well built that they make great transports. I really like the ergonomics of the early 1990's CD Players.
I would also say that cd players with the Trichord boards are worth hunting out.
The only down side is they weight circa 9 to 10kg so pick up is the only option.

I remember you having problems but thought you had eventually managed a frimware fix.
Do you know how long before you get the replacement?

My Mini APE doesn't like Wednesdays. I regularly have to do a reset on or after a Wednesday!
Also struggling to play 24 bit downloads. It won't touch 88.2kHz, and stutters on some 96kHz and 192kHz tracks. I have just bought a 32GB Class 10 SDHC card in the hope of curing these hiccoughs, but it's made no difference (and the tracks play OK on my PC).

Several APE 'keepers' have had software related issues with this device - me included. I've had to reset the thing 3 times now but this isn't a problem at the moment because my office laptop still runs on XP.
However, I'm due for an upgrade to Win 7 soon and then I'll be stuffed because I don't know anyone with an XP machine anymore.
It has been said in previous posts that it seems a little odd that a new device would be so reliant on what is now an obsolete operating system. Maybe if Candy reads this thread she could think about future support for this device. Because, as I see it, these devices will end up getting stuffed in the back of a cupboard when it becomes impossible to reset them - and that would be a great shame because the APE does sound good and it is very convenient.

Just to be clear, the APE reset software runs on 32-bit Vista as well, it's only 64-bit OSs that don't.

It's unlikely any further development will take place with this devce (I seem to remember a new replacement being mentioned some months ago?).
I think the latest version was 1.1 C, so, all we need is a new version (1.1D?) that is compatible with 64-bit systems.

I could not get mine to be recognised in any of the Win XP (32 bit) machines I have. I could not find out why and felt uncomfortable messing. I'm reasonable computer literate (the 3 Pcs I tried it on are all home builds) so I concluded it was a hardware issue albeit Candy has since told me it was not. I'm not sure of the replccement timescale but I have agreed with Candy to review when the one one is received.

Did you use the USB cable as supplied? The home one I recently reinstalled the firmware on was also refused recognition by XP, it seemed. BUT that was using a standard USB cable, after a little hunting around I found another HQ one which allowed the MA to be recognised. I'm you sure tried this but thought I'd mention it anyway

Yes. tried the APE's cable and 2 or 3 others. I even tried the Wireworld jobby I use for my DAC. The thing is I had not tried the usb connection at all before needing to redo the firmware; I had only used the Ape as an SD card reader. It was quite possible that there was a fault with the usb connector (voltage, signal etc). Had I got it working once I would have put it down to me or my PC's.

The problem is not the windows version, it is the bits, it cannot be updated from a 64 bit PC..
