I've tried it Miguel. Also tried adding softener. I think it's a supra-aural thing not just Grados. Such a pity because I like these SR60W headphones. I can wear them fine, but I'm just more aware of them than the music after a while. I was wondering what effect an exact copy of the bowls would be like, but made in pleather (stuffed of course) ( like the AT-ES7) or even better, in leather. I have mostly the same problem with supra-aurals (exception: HD414). HD25-1/II's are fine 'phones, but not for extended listening. But on the road and with high temperatures outside, there's nothing better than HD25-1/II's. The ears themselves don't sweart, the rest of the skin on your head is swearting. But for comfort I clearly prefer circum-aurals (K702's are my favourites). What about placing the SR60 drivers in circum-aural wooden ear-cups. It wouldn't be a SR60 anymore. It would be a kind of new headphones. Most likely the sound will not be the same, but that doesn't means it has to be bad.

The sound would alter but as you say, may not be a bad thing. I get the same issue with the ATH-ES7 and they're softer pleather.
Thing is, it's such a pity because it's fundamentally a very good headphone and Mike's work on the SR60 has really improved it.
However, in the end, it has to go on your head for quite extended periods of time and that's where it doesn't work for so many people.
I just wonder whether it would be possible to get a bigger ring fitted to the original bowls so your ears go right in up to the beginning of the original bowls. A kind of step up bowl.
The only thing is, I think that's what the GS1000 bowls are and they suck the life away from the Grados.
It's about time Mr Grado updated the range to stop the pain!!
With the Audio Technicas, I loosen the drivers so they're really low and I place the drivers 'low slung' on my ears and then tighten up the headband. This helps me but you can't do that so easily on Grados.
I hate stretching the band because for me the pain stops just when they start to fall off.
I must have sensitive lugs.

What about wooden ear-cups for drivers of cheap-o-phones like the HD-681 or SR-850? Maybe one really good headphone design (without drivers; I mean the ear-cups, headband and the rest that makes a headphone) would give the change to manufacture a small series for a fair price. Think of it like a headphone barbone that can be completed with the drivers and cables that you desire. A problem could be the different sizes of drivers and how they have to be fixed inside the cups. Another nice idea: Ear-cups that are closed-back but that can be "opened" by removing the rear panel of the ear-cups. I could imagine also a construction that gives you some control about how much "open" the 'phones should be. Perhaps a nice "barebone" headphone made with wood cups (circual aural) would give a nice toy for trying various drivers. But it's the same with the Grados as with modding the X-Can's: At some point it's no Grado or X-Can anymore. It would be something new. Maybe we would get even better results with other (non-Grado) drivers. I think basically the effect should be similar with most other headphones.

You're right there Christian. However, the company could have done things right in the first place.
I don't understand why any headphone manufacturer would issue headphones with pads like those bowls. Also, if they can be improved by whatever means, then so be it.
It must be the major critcism from most headphone users. Not the sound of them, the comfort.
For me it's a close call - comfort/sound. How much would I put up with before I'd call it a day and not use them? (Even if they sounded good)
Well, I managed 2 hours before I really started to feel it but it meant that I was continually having to move position on my ears. With the K701 or the ATH -ad700, I'd fall asleep and forget they were there.
Having said that, these SR60W are something else. They are really good so I can understand people going the RS1 and 2 route fully.

It's somewhat paradox: While the whole western "civilized" world lusts after even more cheeky cheap Chinese products, we are destroying our own economies by outsourcing jobs to Asia. Our wages aren't cheap enough for those cheap products.
The only long-term solution is to create a better balance. Greater wages for Chinese workers and still jobs in Europe or USA.
Today we have a lot of major imbalances on the world.
The Kanen headphones are certainly of the very cheap type. I wonder what their workers earn per month.
HD681 and SR850 are still very cheap. In fact we don't know a lot about the conditions for the workers that build them.

Well, I am an Apple fan boy and can appreciate the humor. The unworthy don't even deserve an iPhone4. That is why they want it so badly.
My Palm TREO is still going strong and is MUCH cooler in an understatement type of way......

The unworthy don't even deserve an iPhone4. I'm still of the belief that if you don't have a basic command of HTML you shouldn't be allowed "online"....... unfortunately, we both have to accept that the "masses" see it as a god given right to get "online"..... it's turned into more of a "shopping centre" than an information point but who are we to argue?

Mike - extending your analogy could result in us needing to know how to make a car in order to drive one

This looks way outside of my price range. Is there any other cheap way of making Grado SR325e sound decent. They have a horrible "unliveable with" hump at about 2K (I think that's about right). They make percussion sound like you are using a crystal pickup cartridge. Bloody awful.

I haven't heard the SR325e but on my SR225 I replaced the pads with flats which I believe makes a significant difference.

That sounds interesting. I can't seem to find flat pads in the UK, where did you get yours?

I wonder what happened to Mike's post where he suggested putting them in the bin? He may well be right because they are nowhere near as good as the "critics" suggest.

I didn't want to upset you Chris so I removed it but, yes......... they are pretty damned awful aren't they, when I had mine I could only keep them on my head for 5 minutes (if that!). I had the 325i, you can see them in the forum banner, they were bloody uncomfortable and very brash sounding.

Maybe I should sell them to some poor deaf person. I've tried the "tape mod" mentioned elsewhere on the Internet. It makes the bass end a bit bloated and tames the brashness to some degree but quite often voices can sound very wrong on SSSSSS's, and percussion still sounds a bit strange. I have ordered the flat pads from the USA, but I doubt that will tame them enough for my ears.
