If there is enough of us who wants them, I will rush out and buy the tools needed..
I have been lusting for one of those machines for a long time, but I need to keep my expences to a minimum, so I have not got one yet, but if I could get orders on some peices in advance, I will go there..
Let me know

What about wooden ear-cups for drivers of cheap-o-phones like the HD-681 or SR-850?
Maybe one really good headphone design (without drivers; I mean the ear-cups, headband and the rest that makes a headphone) would give the change to manufacture a small series for a fair price. Think of it like a headphone barbone that can be completed with the drivers and cables that you desire.
A problem could be the different sizes of drivers and how they have to be fixed inside the cups.
Another nice idea: Ear-cups that are closed-back but that can be "opened" by removing the rear panel of the ear-cups. I could imagine also a construction that gives you some control about how much "open" the 'phones should be.

SR325iM. If the wood really improves the SR60, I may go a try one of the RS range again. I really like the clarity of them, but the top just hurts after a while on my poor delicate ears! It has got me really curious as to what the cups have done to the sound. They definitely look a lot better now.

He's got me lusting.
Not after the girl though. Handy thing to stick your headphone on though. I'll ask the wife to stand in the corner tonight and try it.
You're going to force me to buy an RS1 now.

You're going to force me to buy an RS1 now. I do think that the RS2 is more your taste, it is not as bright and aggresive as the RS1.

Hey Mike, who is your new empty headed friend with the cool shades? Cute nose. Got her (is it a "her"?) in a clothes shop... the Welsh girlfriend spotted it and asked the sales woman if she could buy it... soooo, I came home from Wales with miss purple head in my case.... she looks good if you put one of those battery operated "disco balls" inside her head.....

Quite a few people say that, yes. No, I wouldn't risk that kind of money on those pads - they hurt after a while in spite of me washing them and putting up with them.
Maybe one day, I'll wear them long enough to wear them in, but I'd only do that if the headphone was a good 'un.
I don't know if it's a camera thing, but those wooden cups that Mike has fitted look deeper than the RS1/2 cups. That's going to have an effect on sound for sure. I like a nice deep cup. I'm similar to Miguel that way.

It looks bloomin' amazing. I normally find the bowls best for sound, but the worst for ears. We need to find a good source of cups!!! When it arrives, it'll go straight on to the V-Can. That has really burned in and sounds so lush now. I put the AT ad700's on it and they really bloom. Good match for sound, especially as the gain is down a bit. A really lovely listen. I was a mug not to get those AT's you put out. They make such good headphones. I have three and really like them. The only one I hated was the ad1000. Too edgy. However, I think you've found an answer with these cups Mike because I think you had the same problem with Grados as myself.

The W-1000 were ok Ian but not a patch on the W-100 IMO... the W-1000 were a lot brighter and there was a definite woody honk to them when you cranked them up.... nice 'phones but there are better for less money. I still regret getting rid of the W-100, they were lovely and lush but, man, they made your ears sweat!

Couldn't agree more... they seem to dig into my head (the bowls) even after much washing they're still akin to a cheese cutter conker bearing down on the side of your head The Senn HD-414 pads are the most comfortable I have yet tried but they look so flippin' bright.... yellow is not an ideal colour for a pair of pads.... Anyways... remember that these 'phones are SR-60's.... don't be "placeboed" by the appearance.... they certainly sound better than the stock SR-60 and I prefer them to the SR-225 and SR-80.... see what you make of them.

Companies like this can cut foams to your specification. They normally sell custom made inserts for cases, but I'm sure they can cut almost everything out of foam as they use CAD for this. Maybe also an idea for custom made ear-pads made of foam. I'm sure most countries have companies that do similar things.

The companies I have talked to all had high startercost, I wanted some foamrings for my eksperiments and the first pair would cost 800 £ the next set would be 0,5 £.. If you can find a company that does not have these starting fees, I would be very interested..

Why do they have to be "foam"?..... you could make a nice pair of pads out of wood, or even cork, as long as you shaped them to your ears.

Why do they have to be "foam"?..... you could make a nice pair of pads out of wood, or even cork, as long as you shaped them to your ears. Exactly the problem. For me, it's not the softness/hardness of the pads. It's the fact that they push onto your ears rather than fit around them. It would have been nice to have a pad that opens up and lets your lugs fit inside - that would alleviate the pain for me.

Why do they have to be "foam"?..... you could make a nice pair of pads out of wood, or even cork, as long as you shaped them to your ears. You need something that can make a seal otherwise the bass just dissapeers, if we are talking around the ear.. On the ear the seal has less impact.. You do not need foam, a material like wool can be used, the red pads is padded with filterwool and it works allright, but foam has advantages you can easyli control the softness and permability of the material.. The pads I am working on at the moment is with filterwool, because the foam would be much to expensive, if only I knew where beyer and the others get their foamrings, then it would help a lot.. I am also working on other materials than skin, I have this theory that if I replace the skin with some sort of cloth on the inner ring, it would remove the "honking" from leather pads, and still help help boosting the bass a bit.. But more on this topic later..

We had at least 34 degrees C today. About half an hour before, I was on the balcony. The thermometer was still a 32 degrees C. Tomorrow will be hot again... we're sweating like pigs... I have some ventilation at the moment (a couple of windows open). It's not so bad at the moment.

We hit 32. Trouble is, Brits homes are not designed for heat like this. We need to catch up with the rest of the world for heating/cooling.

Back onto the wooden cups.... I think they are a major reason why the RS1 sound better than the SR range.... basically more depth in the chamber.... of course the OFC cable and different voice coil materials will make a slight improvement but, overall, it's possible the wood cups make the biggest improvement (if stock V woodied SR-60 are anything to go by).
It would be great if we could source more wooden enclosures, or even aluminium ones and get round to experimenting with the depth. Ian, place your hands over the cups when you're listening and notice the MAJOR difference in sound.... they are very sensitive to even the slightest change.
