Why is it that when you update your computer - XP in this instance some of the controls, settings etc no longer seem to work. In this instance the latest downloads and updates have disabled the camera, the auto back up and 2 of the hard drives. Not funny. How easy is it do a complete re-install or should I pay someone to do it?

Not particularly difficult...
The trick is to get everything backed up properly.
If it can wait till this time next week, I can write you up a guide if you like.
Hopefully somebody else chimes in with something useful prior to then.

Alright... first up... few quick questions:
What email client do you use? Outlook/Thunderbird/Webmail/Other What browser? What software do you use daily? (or have custom configurations for, like custom brushes in photoshop)
Do you have an external hard drive or other partition/drive bigger than the one your system/windows is currently on?

my 3 cents run system restore back to the install of said updates. (btw what updates are you talking about? program update or some such? windows update? ) IF system restore runs to completion, Restore Success. check your non working items see if they work. some window update changes can NOT be undone, so lets hope this can be. if after first sys restore does not fix it , go backwards in succession from time of problem , throough your restore points. a restore point is made auto every time windows update runs, if my xp memory serves me right. (also default setting for sys restore is about 12% of the drive space, so you should have plenty to choose from) IF you can get your system back up with all items running then continue on in short order to make scheduled backups. a complete reinstall of the OS is not hard in the least. but depending on your amount of software installed that can be time consuming, especailly if you did not keep the installers of softs and drivers for hardware. I Highly reccommend a sperate physical drive be it a second internal or external, for your backups and all your downloads. at minimum a seperate partition on the OS drive for said reasons. mind you I'm just a regular guy no 'puter tech I don't even play one on TV hope this can help at least a wee bit.

Fantastic board and cpu Current one is rubbish - came out of a pc Dad organised for some folks who were going to run a drafting business in the Philippines, but as with all things Philippino, much talk and no do. Q6600/Thermaltake HR-01+ on some rubbish intel board. Have swapped out all the fans with Scythe slipstreams running@5V, so it's quiet if nothing else. Was a good guess

Bullpup's lack of reply to this thread is slightly ominous. I hope his PC is ok...

and loved the shooosh lol Robert is a very good friend of mine I imagined as much as that is rather a term of endearment ? maybe my term is wrong lol but anyway .... my guess is his rig is in the shop. or just waiting new parts maybe? all I know is 'puter probs are a BITCH!!! as I have had some VERY frustrating failures as I have learned. I actually think browser hijackers are about the worst thing I've had get in. those fukkerrs are nasty and very hard to rid yourself of them. for such there is NONE better than hijack this free.antivirus.com/hijackthis/basically the program generates a report. you post the report on their forum and someone walks you through the steps you must do to rid your rig of the nasties. let's put it this way, there is NO WAY in HELL I could have figured it out on my own. Hope it never happens to you. when you walk in murky waters sometimes you will bump into an unknown nasty lurking in the muck. not an if but a when ;D hope you can sort it bullpup

I run XP & have had to reload the operating system w all the other apps. several times over he years, due to virus infections etc. After reloading XP w upgrades 1, 2 & 3 turn off automatic updates but make sure the firewall is turned on
Then download www avast com fo virus protection & www spybot com for spyware & malware: they are both freeware & better than all of the bloated crap that microsoft will add w auto updates as some of there code will screw up some applications
This has worked well for me for the last couple of years
