Nigel very kindly sent a pair of these 'phones up to me for a listen and, quite frankly, I can't live without them now so have bought them from him.
Out of ALL my headphones these are the only pair that do bass PROPERLY.... it goes down toe curlingly deep, subterranean even..... I, initially, thought there was something wrong with my amp as I had never heard bass like this from a pair of headphones... it's insanely good!
The general character of the HD250ll could best be described as "warm" but that warmth certainly doesn't detract from the detail these 'phones let through... the best of both worlds here. a lovely organic "sheen" to the mids, beautiful timbre and an "old fashioned" chocolaty tone.
I honestly don't know why these headphones aren't talked about much in "Hi-Fi" circles because they are, by far, the most enjoyable listen I have ever had from a pair of dynamic 'phones.... if I could only keep one pair of headphones from my armoury then it would be the Sennheiser HD250ll linears, they're simply incredible.
Nigel mentioned something about some batches sounding good and other batches not so good, maybe he will chip in here, and he went to a lot of trouble to secure these ones.... they are discontinued now and VERY hard to obtain but if you happen to come across a pair of these on the secondhand market then snap them up because they are bastard good!

F*****g good cans aren't they Feed em a great amp and source, the sound blows your mind The BEST I have EVER heard Leo without a shadow of a doubt! As you say..... fckin' mind blowing. NO! I am now the legal custodian of his pair of HD-250ll but have agreed to let him have an occasional listen to them as part of the sale.... I think he's quite happy with his newly acquired AKG K-1000. So Nigel was saying..... well, these ones are obviously from a GOOD batch.... they shit over every other pair of dynamic cans I have yet heard (and that's a good few) they are just SO bouncy, so bassy, so silky, so musical....... I'm going to try them with HD-650 cable and Nigel is going to give me a try of his Cardas (which he reckons takes them to another level again). There's a duplicate HD-250ll thread in the amp forum so I will move the posts into this thread..... the "flow" may appear a bit cocked up but you'll know why.......

Nigel has very kindly sent me a pair of these 'phones up for audition and I must say they are particularly good!
The first thing that struck me was the bass extension these things punt out.... absolutely subterranean!... it's like having a pair of headphones with a built in sub woofer..... I haven't concentrated on the mid and high frequencies yet but the bass is, by far, the best I have yet heard from a pair of headphones be they open or closed in design.... it's more loudspeaker like (ie: sounds like it is in open air) than your usual headphone bass which is very much in your head.....
I'm going to give these some serious head time before reporting back.

"I find that mine vary from recording to recording. Very accurate sounding and clean.
I would like to change the horrible plastic surround for something more akin to the HD650 if I could find something that fits.
They are a wonderful closed headphone. Had mine for a long time. They also have a nice treble quality.
Senn HD600 and the 250's are my favourite headphones for close, detailed monitoring."
" Reading this back, I must have been P***ed. What I meant to say was, I would, like to change the PADS for something more akin to the HD650 rather than the plastic ones supplied!!!
I'll leave it here so that Pinkie's new thread on the same headphone in the Headphone forum remains intact without my interference.
Meanwhile, if anyone knows of a velour pad that fits, could you let me know. "

FROM DUPLICATE THREAD
PINKFLOYD WROTE:
Ian, have I just struck it lucky with this pair or is the bass on yours a LOT deeper than the HD-600 too? I have NEVER heard this type of bass through headphones, it's goes soooooooo LOW and sooooo DEEP, at times I think there's a massive subwoofer strapped onto the side of my head
I remember Graham Slee saying to me once "where's the bass?" when he took delivery of a pair of HD-600. Now I know what he meant, these things are pure bass meisters.
I'm not too keen on the pleather pads either, especially in the warm weather, don't get me wrong they are comfortable on the head but they sure do make your ears sweat and, being bald on top, the plastic headband gets wet too.... I'd much rather velour pads and a leather headband.
In all my years of headphone listening I can honestly say that I like these the best, the presentation is truly different (more loudspeaker like than "in your head") and.... did I mention the bass? They really do buck the trend and are not your usual common or garden type presentation, I don't want to take them off my head they are so bloody musical and enjoyable.
Nigel, please do chip in if you've got time.... you mentioned something about some batches of HD250ll being better than others could you please elaborate?
I'll move this thread to the headphone forum, god knows what it's doing in the amp forum, and will remove the "other" HD250ll thread from the headphone forum.

Well glad your liking them, I was surprised how much depth and width they have too for closed back types I need a 4pin XLR plug and socket so I can have the option of single ended or balanced I tried the HD650 and HD600 cable, quite interesting tbh, the bass etc changed to my ears, anyway see what you think. So Nigel has AKG K-1000!!! He'll need a monster amp to drive those buggers

Holy shit! I just went back to the HD-600 for a listen and it's as if there is NO bass coming out of them, they sound positively anemic compared to the HD-250 Blimey, I never thought I'd call the HD-600 "bass light"

Leo, what do you think about opening the HD-250 up and sticking some of that 3M dampening tape on the enclosures? Worth a go maybe, I damped my HD-200 with butyl rubber strip and it made ONEHELLUVA improvement.......

Worth a go maybe, I damped my HD-200 with butyl rubber strip and it made ONEHELLUVA improvement....... Hmm, not sure tbh , could that tape be easily removed just incase? The enclosures do feel plasticy, maybe worth a go but only if it can be reversed. Funny thing is with some tracks I honestly get the impression bass can be felt in my feet also I'm now at the stage where the sound goes so wide and as has so much depth I'd be amazed if it could be improved, no other cans I've heard so far has ever done this. Go from say K701's to these

Actually Leo, no point "trying" to improve the SQ as it's pretty much spot on as it is! I agree, go to the K-701 after listening to the HD-250 and it's like "wtf!!! where's the bloody bass gone!" You don't notice it if you listen to the K-701 all the time but swap over to these and, boyo, you notice it BIG TIME.

I paid around £150 for them. Be warned though that there are many internet sites advertising them for sale but when you actually contact them by telephone, they say no longer in stock & apologize for not updating there website more often. These phones often pop up on ebay though, especially some of the European ebay sites. Good luck.

Any of you know which Sennheiser headphones are supposed to replace HD 250 II linear? HD-280 Pro? HD-380 Pro? Both the 280 and 380 look pretty shitty build quality wise and, if I'm not wrong are made in their plant in China... the HD-250 was made in their Irish plant so not a lot of similarities build wise.
