The Zigis Cmoy hooked up to 10x1.5AA (15v) battery pack, sounds awesome, the depth and clarity is amazing for such a small unit Mick. Amazing isn't it. The battery pack turns it into a different beast altogether. And WAY cheaper than a decent PSU The first time I heard the modded 681s through my old Zigis I was Eh? How can this be SO good Glad you're liking it Mick Tremendous bang for your buck IMHO.

i built my own cmoy off of a tutorial on tangentsoft.net around an opa 2707ap and honestly, for how cheaply i made it(probably the main reason, other than sourcing the op amp, that it took me the better part of my highschool years to perfect) its really good sounding. and the only "noise" i get is when i have no source connected, coming as a very light hiss. it disappears as soon as i connect a source to it though. over all it cost me around $80-$100US to build. i have it running of of either a 9v battery or 11.6 volt 750ma wall wart. it sonds wonderful with my unmodded hd681's. but it does get a little harsh at higher volumes. im using a cowon j3 as my primary source

Thanks for resurrecting this this thread: I'd forgotten where I'd read about the Zigis CMoy HPA, one of which, by a strange co-incidence, I've ordered and am expecting delivery of any day now. Having now re-read this thread, I'm wondering if I should risk a few £s on this LM4562, which this seller suggests might not be genuine...

Thanks for the recommendation, Ian.
EDIT: Having now read the RG thread, can I assume that the metal-cased LM4562 op-amp (with pins bent appropriately) is a drop-in replacement in the Zigis (i.e., no further meddling/soldering required)?

Hi John, Yes just a straight swap. Don't worry about a heatsink either. In fact it might not fit in the zigis with the heatsink Ian

I think i can hear a positive SQ improvement using the metal bodied op-Amps, and i have always thought the Zigis sounds just as nice as the Neco portable, especially using the 15v power pack i use with mine. I decided to go for the basic Zigis (i.e., not the DC input/LM4562 version) as I wanted something in which I can replace the batteries easily while I'm away on holiday (sunny Wales, camping!). My Mk.1 Neco portable would most likely not go the fortnight without a re-charge, and the portable I have used previously ( PA2V2 by Gary, off eBay) just doesn't cut the mustard for me any more...

^ I still love the PA2V2, it was the first portable headphone amp I owned. Now over 60 portable headphone amps later I still enjoy using the PA2V2.

Some were gifts or loaner units. Have you found that you have become TRULY honest about an amp's capabilities now? I have found that "over exposure" has made me less of a "spray him down with pepper dust" threat to the postman...... a new amp arrives and it takes me ages to even OPEN the package..... it's like "not another one!!" At first I was MEGA excited and used to sit at the letter box with my tongue hanging out, awaiting the package.... the postman would either have to hit my tongue with a stick or spray me down with pepper dust before he could deliver the package ( I was so excited)...... Nowadays I say to him "any way you can send it back to the sender" The amps are great but the cardboard / packaging is a bitch to get rid of. You have probably found (by now) that "most" sound much the same (apart from a few that sound so good you will never get rid of them).... can you now understand what I said to you many years ago Miguel? You'll end up running around in circles and find that the "FIRST" amp you ever heard has come FULL CIRCLE and is your favourite once again. I find the winter months the best time to discuss this so am off to fill my hot water bottle and enjoy the "summer" whilst it lasts.

Mike, I have three portable amps which I consider superb. The Xin Reference w/ module C5 or the Reference w/ module D5. The third is a MiniBox Es by Head Direct.
On the DAC/Amp combo I like the iBasso D4 since I can roll op-amps. I also like the Leckerton UHA-4, specially the volume pot. You all may want to read on the Leckerton UHA-4 volume pot since it is a very nice feature.
The inexpensive PA2V2 at about $45 w/ charger has a lot to offer and for the money it is very nice and I keep it for sentimental value and it is very rugged.
PD: I am thinking of buying the JDS Labs cMoyBB™ v2.02 which retails for about $62 w/ S&H.
Cheers.

The amp would just measure slightly better. His conclusion would be exactly the same though. If you read his articles you will understand why.
The ONLY thing I disagree about with this guy is the fact that he states output resistance should be 0 Ohm for headphone amplifiers. Tell that to K701 owners (and other headphones that like to be driven from this, old, standard) The rest of all his articles I agree 100% with.
I do not recommend RG members to read his informative articles though. It will 'P' most RG members off (and head-fi-ers even more).

It definitely helps. It's funny, but the output impedance is one thing that I am much more aware of nowadays with all headphones.
I wish the headphone makers would be a bit more specific.
Funnily enough, I'm also very fond of the Pocket Amp V2!!

really, I would have thought Mick, Ian, and one or two other "no bullsheet" kinda guys would like his style, I have enjoyed his posts this year - from Feb 2011, every one of them, this one got me started, laugh, I cried, it made me realise that there is so much BS in the upper end of the hi- fi industry, most people are cottoning on that a lot of it is snake oil in these recessionary times we live in ! nwavguy.blogspot.com/2011_02_01_archive.html

I can listen to a transistor radio and get a lorra pleasure from music. Some of the differences that are spoken about though are often very tiny.
You need to be very attuned to your 'standard' set up in order to be able to detect differences.
It's very useful to have a wide selection of stuff as well so you can 'place' the unknown stuff somewhere between two 'known' pieces of equipment.
It helps to determine any characteristics. Listening straight would be difficult since your brain 'tunes' in and compensates for sound quite quickly.
The question really is whether the differences are worth the money. I would say not for a lot of people, personally. If you're worried by cost, then leave it out.
I think RG is good at fleshing out 'good buys' and improving stuff too.

x2 couldn't agree more Ian
but it doesn't stop me tinkering, and listening to other headphones before I buy them along the way, but that is real fun for me, and having only three main sources keeps things simple for me
luckily I have stopped buying willy nilly, and the only three sources I use for headphone use in order of playtime are : iPod video running Rockbox Windows XP laptop for hi-rez & Redbook Squeezebox Duet for Redbook
no more turntables, no more CDP's, no more expensive interconnects, no more crazy priced speaker cables, you get the picture without me rambling on !
