I never got to hear it but from reading posts over the years the AKG K501 / Heed Can Amp combo was pretty special as well. Probably the finest combo... I "heard" that somewhere too Hold on! It was me who said it Yup, Numero uno = Heed canamp + K-501 Close second = V2 + K-501 Distant relation = Solo + K-501

Head-Fi have removed all traces of me and have removed my 10,000 posts so I cannot "refer" to my HEED Canamp thread which put "Heed" on the map.... it has ALL been wiped by the Gestapo over at Head-Fi.... Those of you who know the score KNOW that I put the HEED CanAmp on the map.... the only rubbish that I can link to now is this www.head-fi.org/forum/thread/228051/heed-canamp-mods-thread some "asshole" trying to steal my thunder, unsuccesfuly. Miguel, do you have a record of the "lost" head-Fi files? Mike.

Had these 501,s fed a diet of smooth fm for the last 2 weeks and they are starting to loosen up a little bit, sound a bit more clearer and more effortless. Listened to syd barrett - the madcap laughs, and it sounds like i have never heard before, really analogue and musical, you could hear some one practicing on a hammond organ very low in the background while syd is talking to dave gillmore at the controls, (probably rick wright). Put some tom waits on (early stuff) and that sounded very analogue complete with tape hiss, listened to the song blue valentine and i got a sense he was sort of there singing in front of me. Going to leave these suckers burning 24/7 for the next 6 weeks if what mike said about burn in with akg,s is true. paddy

For whatever it is worth a good friend of mine whom I trust in this "sound quality" stuff prefers the K601 to the K501. I have listened to his K601 and I thought it sounded good, but I preferred the K501. Said comparison was a few years ago, I will have to re-compare.

seems a high price when you can get new K601's for around £116 + postage.. or have you seen them cheaper than that?

It proves some HP's can be a good investment and people are willing to pay more for something then it's worth if it gets rarer. That's typical for an auction. The guy who values it the most and has the dough pays the most, at least if more then one person in the world is interested. It's a BIG world..

I wouldn't sell my K501's for £157 so the bid winner has probably invested wisely.

I wouldnt sell mine either, i got mine for £85 brand new in a sealed box plus £6 p+p (nos). These are starting to sound better the more i leave them plugged in to a tuner with smooth fm playing, listening to the bone machine album by Tom waits and you can sense the atmosphere in the live studio on a few tracks. Seen a pair of akg 270 playback for sale too anyone know anything about these, people on forums are refering to them as closed sextetts they have a 75ohm impedence. paddy

No I think if someone is enough mental to pay more as the headphones coasts, let it be, becouse i gave up in a auction wo they sold for 75 plus shipping...Its simply a small hype about these headphones..

I love the sound of my K501 which I bought new for $110 USD about 3 years ago. Do not plan on selling them.
