If one preferes the K501 or K701 is more of a personal nature/preference then anything else I think. Also one gets 'accustomed' to the can that is listened to the most (which happens to be the one that sounds best)

Many people hate the K701, as many as those who love them. Leo dislikes the K701 quite strongly. Alex

As I said... it's a matter of taste/preference if you like these cans or not and which of the two ones you prefer also. It's not an exact science with a right or wrong.
Personally I agree with Leo on this but can fully understand why many people do like it.

Congratulations! There can't be many new unused K501's about so that's quite a find It's thanks to some of the links that you posted in this thread that convinced me to bid on the pair I won, so I hope you enjoy them as much as I do I took Nigels' advice and tried the K601 pads (thanks to Frans) and they improve the comfort over the stock pads without changing the sound signature much, maybe a touch more bass. You might want to try that.

Nice one Christian, you will love them Just be sure to allow a good year for them to bed in before doing any critical listening.

Nice one Christian, you will love them Just be sure to allow a good year for them to bed in before doing any critical listening. I'm already listening with them since about 10 minutes. I've collected them this evening. The seller was very kind and we have also talked some minutes. Looks like he is an AKG lover. He sold the K501 and is selling a used K401. His main 'phones are K500 and he is one of those that prefer K500 over K501. He uses his 'phones mainly with DJ/studio equipment and has not a lot of amps. Probably we will make a small meeting soon. I'll send him also the link to the Rock-Grotto. I hope we get also a new member... My first question would have been if the K501's need the same amount of burn-in than the K701/K702. You have already answered that, Mike. I've expected the same. Currently, I have them plugged-in to the PreSonus HP4. I think it's a good combination, IMO the amp has no problems to drive them. I'll compare them also with my other amps soon. BTW: First impressions are very good. The seller has used them only for very short time. They are really new (beside the missing original box). He had already K500's before he bought the K501's and he didn't like the K501's as much as the K500's. He sells the K501's because he became aware that he did not use them at all. He is interested in buying K701/K702's. He can listen to my K702's when we have the meeting. He described what he prefers regardings. I'm almost sure the K701/K702's are not exactly his taste, but we will see.

You might want to try that. I'm sure that I'll like them. They sound great right away, but I'm very curious if they change as much as my K702's. I'm almost sure my K702's are still changing. At the moment I don't like them as much as a few weeks/months before. I've listened at lot to my HD650's and HD580's in the last few weeks. The K501 is a nice addition. I'm very happy with the buy. AFAIK the author of the K501/K500 review did not test K701/K702 pads. Maybe I can test this, but for now I'll stay with the stock K501 pads. I think they need at least 300 hours burn-in before I change something. If they change as much as my K702's then it will take months for a real comparison. The PreSonus HP4 is a very nice amp. It allows me to compare different headphones easily (and it's sound also very good with most of my 'phones).

A quick test with K501 + Neco Mosfet V2 (linear pot / gain 3) is also promising. I can easily take the pot to 12:00, something I'd never do with my K702's or HD650's (usually I'm around 10:00 to 10:30 with them).
Probably I'll also have (more) use for my Neco Mosfet V2 with log pot and gain 5.
I think the K501's have not that deep bass which some of the newer 'phones have. But IMHO this is no drawback with most music. At low volumes the bass is sometimes a bit too flat, but most likely this is because they simply don't get enough power from the amp at such low pot settings.
The PreSonus HP4 seems to have a bit more punch, but those that have read the thread about it maybe have noticed that my main complaint with the HP4 was the very small pot range with most of my 'phones. Even with the K501, the pot range is still small. It would render me deef to take the HP4 to 10:00 with the K501's.

Hi folks After checking on ebay for the last few months for a pair of k501, i found this website that has them new from akg (end of line stock), they are genuine new boxed with 12mths garantee, i ordered the last pair according to the salesman but they are still advertised on the website, he said he might get some more so if anyone is still intrested in the k501 then phone/email them. Mine come tomorrow so will be testing them against the ath ad700,s. Heres the website. www.soundexposure.com/store/AKG_K501.html It,s not an ebay shop by the looks of it. paddy

My k501,s came today . First impresions were nice light phones with comfy earpads and a nice leather headband with the real leather mark on them. Soundwise these are excellent phones and probably the flattest sonic signature i have heard, very musical out the box, very dynamic and smooth, the bass is ok too, i prefer this type of sound than too much bass masking the lower mids and not in your face, they show every fault in recordings too, maybe less forgiving than the k701 i would imagine, very good imaging and soundstage. They have only 2 hours through them so can anyone tell me what sort of improvement i will get when they have burned in, i cant wait for them to settle these are deffo keepers. Ignore the attatchment below it,s a pain in the arse to open, see 3 pictures below. paddy

Paddy, your K501's look great (and really new). My K501's are also new, but with no original box and very low hours on them (but absolutely mint, I think it's correct to call them still "new").
BTW: Maybe a better idea to create a photobucket.com account instead of the attachment. A basic photobucket account is free (I'm also using a free photobucket account).
Do you have also the problem that the model markings are pealing off easily? I think the original glue got too dry over the years. I'll probably have to re-glue them.

Christian they are brand new phones, the box was still sealed when i got them today as you can see from the photos they still had polythene around them. The shop i bought them from bought end of line stock from akg. I only have 2 hours on them so hopefully the k501 badge wont fall off or i will glue it back on. I paid £85 for these and £6 postage and packing, i dont know how much these were when they were out, but im,e happy with them and i know they will sound better once burned in. paddy

There was me thinking new 501's were a rarity I think £85 is a great price for these given their scarcity Paddy, I reckon they could have charged a lot more and still sold them. As to the model badges Christian, mine are fine but you might not want to stick them too securely as there is a screw behind them in case you ever need to take the housing apart. Here is a link to the service manual: www.akg.com/mediendatenbank2/psfile/datei/93/K501_K500_4055d21891b68.pdf

I had a very short "AKG meeting" today. Pascal (the seller of my K501/K401's) has brought the K401 with him and I had also a short listen with his K271 MkII's. He had a listen with my K702's because he has plans to get K702/K701. I was rather surprised that he liked my K702's. His favourites are still the K500's. From left to right: K401, K271 MkII, K702, SR850, K501.Does anyone know if it's still possible to buy new K500's? Pascal would be interested, because he likes his K500's so much. He can't live with the K501's (I can live VERY comfortable with them...), but he really LOVES the K500's. I'm also interested in getting one of those new K501's, but maybe not in the next few weeks. I need to hear more with my K501's before I go for another pair. I really like the K501 and IMVHO they are most likely the best 'phones overall that I own or have heard.

Miguel What hf amp do you use to get the best out of the k501, i am using the xcan v2 with panasonic upgrade kit and gold pin tesla valves, i have the volume knob in between 12oclock and 3 oclock, maybee because i am using a kimber attenuated interconnects (-14db) as well as the 120ohm impedence having this effect on the volume. I also read somewhere valves make these phones sing. paddy

WHAT? that would be to loud for me! I usually have the V2 set at about 9:30-10 o'clock. I also like the SRGII and RWA Isabelina HPA.

But why would you need to do that ? Unless the signal source was way too high a level of output, it is only going to degrade performance. Has the V2 had it's gain reduced as per the mods posted by Mike ?

Alex I bought the attenuated interconnect because i did not like that in yer face sound also the output voltage of my arcam cd player is 2.2 vrms into 220mv input of the amp, now i have more range on the volume knob instead of 9 or 10 oclock and ending up with a Tony curtis haircut due to the loudness. The minus 14db does not degrade the sound it makes it a hell of a lot more musical and dynamic plus i dont get fatigued anymore, i can hear subtlety instead of a boomy wall of sound. I have at adh ad700,s which are 32ohm and i have the volume on the xcan v2 inbetween 9 and 12oclock but when i plug the k501,s in the volume is 12 to 3oclock, i have heard these are a bugger to drive but i thought it was down to the 120ohm impedence and the difficulty to drive issue as well. If i turn the v2 vol up full they become too loud so i think the v2 is good enough to drive them ok, someone else might dissagree. paddy
