Over the weekend I bid on and won a CD player for spares or repair for 99p. The listing stated that the drawer would not open so I thought that could be fairly easy to fix so it was worth a go. It arrived yesterday so I took the lid off and checked to see if there was anything obvious obstructing the drawer. Not having seen inside this player before I didn't realise anything was wrong at first but once I got the mech out it became obvious what the problem was - the laser had already been stripped out This player has clearly been misdescribed. 99p might not seem much but the extra £14.50 for shipping is a fair bit to be wasting at a time when I am on a reduced wage. The problem is it is not worth chasing it up through Paypal for what I would get back. I'd really like to get this player up and running but that is now probably going to mean that I will have to strip the laser from another player, it's a Sony so there should be loads of donor players available but that will probably double my outlay at least. Then there is the worry that settings have been tampered with in the player which could make setting up the laser without proper test equipment very difficult. This experience probably won't stop me from buying these types items from ebay again but I have learned another lesson. I am just waiting to see what the seller has to say but it is fairly certain that he has earned himself his first negative feedback unless a refund is forthcoming. OK rant over.

Sorry to hear this however in the time taken to write the rant you could have completed the paypal reclaim and unless I was just lucky you will be repaid in full.

I thought paypal required you to return the item via a tracked method. by the time I have done that it means I get virtually nothing back. I have been offered £5.99 refund which I have accepted. Then if I come across a suitable donor player cheaply enough I can have a go at transfering the laser mech over to the Sony

Not to defend the seller or anything, but are you sure he knew that the player had no laser Maybe he bougth it in the same way you did, as faulty, and he maybe did not have a clue to what was wrong with it And frankly 15 £ is in no way a fortune, in denmark it would not even buy you a decent steak, it is about the same price as a "big mac menu".. I can see how you are disapointed and understand why you give negative feedback, that is just cool with me...

No - as far as I am aware you submit the cost of rerturn postage as part of your claim. Thanks for the info, and the confirmation mrarroyo, good to know for the future. I have already agreed a partial refund in the hope that I can find a replacement laser from a donor player cheaply or even possibly on freecycle. clausdk, the seller claims not to have known about the laser but as he is a hi fi dealer I would have thought a basic knowledge of the internal condition of the items he is selling would seem appropriate.

It was in no way my intend to pis anybody off, with my comment, I was just thinking that if I had a bougth a player as faulty knowing about one of the flaws, I would not know anything about the inside of such a thing....
But if the seller is a HiFi dealer he should know something like that... I hope it all turns out for the best

I was quite happy to take a partial refund after I found out the "special edition" CD player I purchased turned out to be the standard version with a "special edition" badge....... the seller really didn't know (poor sod) and was quite shocked when I told him the CDP he had been listening to for all those years wasn't what he thought it was ;D I would have been REALLY pissed off if it didn't have a laser inside it tho

I bought a climbing "duvet" jacket off ebay .. the description and picture were misleading and i thought it was a higher spec jacket of the same brand.
I won at a price which was cheap for the higher spec jacket, but retail at the lower spec.
The jacket was so nice i decided to keep it .. but at 141 quid plus 6 quid postage, I was pissed I contacted the seller who instantly agreed it was misleading as agreed to reimburse in full. This didn't help as I was about to head off to SPain climbing. So I said I'd keep the jacket, and left it to his good karma and conscience to refund me some money. I was pleased to find hed reimburded me 50 quid when I got back from Spain .. A very fair amount considering the jacket was almost new.
I think we often assume the worse .. but an open dialogue with sellers (normally private individuals) can be productive. I've only ever needed to resort to eBay claims once when a shiester was obviolusy selling Grado headphones with no stick, and was pocketing the money for several sales before buying them in bulk from a source. After 1 month of waiting I resorted to a claim which was resolved in 2 days with a full refund including postage (because he hadn't actually ever sent anything)

The CD player should take either Sony KSS150 or KSS210, they seem to be common to many players of the period. If it is either of these I would be very happy to give it a go and reimburse you any expenses. Paul

Not really a shody dealing, but rather the seller didn't care.
I bought a pair of K601's from a local seller threw ebay and set-up a pick up time. I got a phone call the next day saying my phones were ready to pick up So I went to pick them up and the guy I talked to went to get them. A few minutes passed and he returned out front and said the headphones were shipped out earlier in the day. Dude I was like WTF he said they were ready. So then I brought it to his attention that MusicDirect had them for $20 cheaper. The place I bought it from said they do price matching and I brought a long a print out of the MD page. They wouldn't not honor the price matching saying MD had them for much more and discount codes don't apply. I got pissed and was like "well you said you'd honor it online already, so don't got back on your word. Plus it's not a discount code since MD says to e-mail them for a better price.". Eventually they give me my money and I told them I would leave them Neutral feedback...

I've always thought ebay was a sort of on line car boot sale You should try it, it's a pretty decent place with lots of good stuff. Buying secondhand stuff is a bit of a crapshoot but as long as you are buying brand new from reliable vendors it's about as good as it gets.
