OK as you probably know I love Sennheiser PX-100 cans. OK It can't match my HD595s or my AKG K701s but for a can that's available for Under £20 most places they are phenominal value. I spend more time under these than either of my bigger headphones.
Anyway to cut a long story short I was wondering a couple of days ago if there was an easy way I could mod them and decided I would remove the foam from the back of the phones to try to open the sound out and wow did it work.
Gone is much of the top heavy bass and suddenly these tiny wonders are even better than they were before. Midrange and topend is improved as there is less bass hiding things. The sound is much more open than before. I always was impressed by the soundstage the PX-100 dellivered but now everything is much more coherent with more space between the instruments and greater width and depth to the soundstage.
Performing the mod is simplicity itself. The back of the PX-100 is a grey spoked plastic affair. Between the spokes you will see a thin foam layer. Simply carefully grab the foam with a pair of tweezers and pull it out. It will break up but you can get most if not all of it out pretty easily with any stragler bits left under the spokes where they can't be seen although I got those out with a bent staple.
The naked can still looks asthetically pleasing with only a few small bits of solder and circuit on view. Besides who gives a crap what it looks like when it sounds this good.
If you don't mind the tiny risk that you may bugger up your PX-100s then why not give it a go. I've modded both my pairs now as the difference between the modded and unmodded cans was considerable.
