Howzabout a few of us compile our reference recordings and send them to each other? It would be great to hear what you guys use to evaluate a pair of headphones or an amp etc.... I'll get the ball rolling and compile a few of my favourites tomorrow and send it out to whoever wants to send me their favourites..... good idea?

paradigm Why not use .wav instead of .flac? A DVD can hold an awful lot of selected tracks, and you could leave out the "filler" tracks of a typical album. Selected tracks would also be better for CD use, even if it takes 2 CDs, they are less than 50 Cents each these days for brand name CD-Rs. Some people may even be able to pick the .flac difference if they use the Jaycar modded HA ! Alex P.S. I have already started the ball rolling, even though one CD came from Fanboi !(TonyG) I hope you didn't mind Tony ? It is a great selection.

Yes i think i got into my overly enthusiastic self. I like the idea of making a personnel best of reference CD. I like that idea. Selected track of differing styles etc, to best judge the focused object. I'll start auditioning.
Thankyou.

Cracking Idea. Unfortunately all my CDs bar a few favorites are in storage as I'm moving soon but I have all my albums ripped to 320 Kbps MP3s on a selection of DVDs so if you don't mind the slight quality loss I'm still up for creating a favorites selection. They sound great in my sony DVP but don't quite have the same presence as the originals but it's damn close.
Can I assume we steer clear of obvious favorites like the Ultrasone CD?

It's a great idea here! Ya, what happen to this? At least I get to know more international reference tracks here. I'm game but let me compile them first. But with limited time that could take some ages.

Felt like waking this thread since it´s a splendid idea. If anyone is interested I might compile a CD with reference quality. There will be some classical, some Opus3, some Stockfish and a little bit of jazz. I also have a couple (four) recordings done with binaural technique if someone might be interested, all are jazz.

Must check with my wife [1] on the legality of sampling sections of tracks for this purpose. Certainly in terms of quoting written material you can share in that repsect ... but I wonder if a CD containing lots of 10-20 second clips would be a problem. If not then I may put up some samples on a web site or FTP server people could download.

However, let me settle with Vallejos first as I'm having some problems getting his reference tracks. Technical problems, btw, and not others.

I've often thought of this idea, but from a differnt prospective. How about we all... being those who want to participate, make 1 dvd of wave files, then we all pass them on to the next person. What you like, or what may inyerest you as far as using for a refference, send the disc to the next person in line.
Edit: instead of wave file I sjould of said flac or shn. At least those arte most common from what i know

That way, someone thats may have a different int erst, have a solid foundation to compare, a wide variety of music.
edit: become more .... have a better idea of ones tastes since you have a solid foundation to compare to/ Hence, better comparisons

Why ? You can fit 7 or 8 complete CDs in uncompessed .wav files on a single DVD. There are enough losses involved already in extracting off the CD ,exactly what is recorded, without converting to another format, even if it is claimed to be "lossless"

Wav is still the best. Even EAC, the best ripper as used by many, used wav. Flac is still lossless compression like zip or rar. Claim is one thing but I believe the purest uncompressed wav is still the best.

If you are interested to join us 4 here, please PM and take this offline as it can be quite sensitive issue due to copyright legality in different countries.
