They certainly shouldn't be sounding bad from new but "Sony MP3 discman" won't be doing them any favours whatsoever.... garbage in garbage out is an addage that is even more true today than it has ever been. Don't expect an amp or a pair of 'phones to make a silk purse out of a sow's ear, they will only show up the flaws of the source. The Senns (PX-100) will sound good with these devices as they've been engineered to colour things to a globally accepted low fi type of universally pleasing sound... the Goldrings are engineered to give what they get and not add anything to the proceedings.
An amp won't make the sound any better it will just amplify what is already there. Will you be using the discman as a source with the Solo??

I will be using the Solo Green with a Cambridge Azur C640V2 and a Technics SL-Q2 Turntable. The cans are getting better now, midrange is opening up as well as the highest trebles, bass has tightened up considerably. Off topic: Mike, do you have any idea where I can buy a decent IC to replace my spagetthi standard IC that is standard on the table? Mind you, there's not too much space where it goes into the table, it should be not too thick but of a good quality. Cheers Dennis.

The Goldrings are getting better all the time, I have now been using them for about 150 Hrs. Yesterday I came home and used them through my home rig and WOW, there was a lot more of everything but I was mostly stunned by the tight and deep bass.
More updates when the Solo Green arrives.
Cheers,
Dennis.

Why don't you try your neighbours break-in method? It sounds like more fun.

They should be here already, been a week since I won the auction. I emailed the good chap concerned today and he was like "so many items, haven't posted yet, give us a chance" frankly I think that's a load of shit. Seven days is MORE than enough time to post a few things. Ill be leaving less than stellar feedback because of this, not that I think it'll make a damn bit of difference.

They never arrived. Seller was decent enough to refund me for them though. I spent the money on some PX100s and a new turntable mat.
The PX100s are fakes and the mat hasnt come yet. Ebay clearly loves me at the minute.

I just knew I'd seen this somewhere on here - made an instant, well very fast and substantial difference to the Grado GS1000's but unfortunately even rockgrotto can't put in what God left out..... I've listened to nothing but the AT W1000's since I got them.

I am late to the DR150 game, got a pair about two weeks ago after selling some of my Grado SR325i which I found too heavy for my liking and they sound very Gradoish like, but not as bright more between MS2 and MSPro. I find it takes about 4-6 hours to get the sound to open up. I find the clampage force a bit tight also and I no way have a huge head. I usually bed the cans by clamping it over several books and by using a hair dryer set to med or high postion to warm the headband up a little and let it cool and they will open up to a more comfortable clamp force.

edt, there is a piece of plastic and "scotch tape" behind the grills which should be removed to allow them to open up. Do a search for the pictures which were posted by both Mike (PinkFloyd) and also by Jelosno. Let the DR150 burn in for about 100 hours as well before any final judging. Good luck.

Glad you like them guys. Had mine for a few months and decided to get them modded and keep them as my only pair. For those outside UK, I bought them from Mantra Audio and they shipped mine to Canada for 14 pounds. Here is a pic of my pair : They are now mine, bought them off skylab for $250 (can't remember shipping) I'm not listening until christmas though, damn spending money on pc instead of headphones meant they are a pressie. The days go buy so slowly...

Enjoy them, $100 for the wood work and a re-cable does not seem bad at all.

I just got the grille cloth off, but I guess newer batch of Docs are using a much much stronger and stickier type of structural double sided adhesive tape that are diecutted along the edge of the cloth and takes some doing in removing. The residue left over is much more difficult to remove than those earlier batch that used the cellophane tape. While at it I also touched up the solder joints and used some solvent and cotton swabs to clean off all the flux residue on the solder joints on the plug PCB and driver. The wetting of soldering and workmanship is passable, but not the best, too much solder is used on the drivers, but thats just me being anal because of my manfacturing background in mission critical components.

Do you think I should buy an amp for them? They are probably going to be my only headphones I am going to buy for a while so I don't want to go hugely overboard on an amp. I've heard they make the most of any given kit...what is as good amp for the £ would you think?

Some info that you Doc fans might want to know about. Part numbers to follow.
From Goldring UK:
"The ear pads for DR50/ DR100/ DR150 are interchangeable.
UK prices are £3.50, £3.50 and £5.00 respectively. You would need to check in your local market as Export prices are normally higher to cover fright etc."

Hey Mike! Do you still like those DR150? Now when you have had them for a while I thought it would be interesting to know. Since they are so cheap I thought I should get a pair. There is a store in Gothenburg that has them, maybe I drive there tomorrow

Has anyone tried Goldring's GX200? I've just grabbed a pair and I'm a fan, a tad too bassy for my liking (but I'm not a fan of bass) but a simple bass reducer EQ in my iPod and it all sounds great.

Just joined, first posting..
I got the Goldring DR-150's last Saturday. Wow. They are like a HD600 with power, PRAT and clarity. Nice drive and dynamics in the bass that does not happen with the Sennheisers either. What really amazes me is the imaging, which you can only get with closely matched drivers. Well done Goldring! They need a good long run-in, I found a lot of sibilance initially that seems to be going away as I blast Strapping Young Lad through them while I am gone during the day.
I am somewhat loathe to remove the padding from behind the grill as I worry about excess leakage that is not present in it's current condition.
Has anyone experienced an increase in leakage with the padding removed?
I'd also like to shorten the cord. Do the plugs screw apart? I can't seem to get them to budge.

Hi Beagle I also liked my DR150 from the start. They really sound good directly from an iPod and have that upper bass that makes you think they are better than HD600... ...but that is just when driving HD600 out of iPod... When you give HD600 a proper drive (read: good amp), it just betters DR150 in almost everything. Amping does not improve DR150 to the extent that it does with Sennheisers. You can really hear/feel that when listening to a complicated/loud passage with many instruments/sounds/voices - DR150 "glue them together" in a way... HD600 does not get that "claustrophobic" in such situations... But don't be bothered - this is just my opinion/preference. As for the cord, I would not mess with the 3,5 mm to 3,5 mm QED cable provided with DR150. Just make/buy/order another mini cable of desired length. For me DR150 cable is just too good for that. ...and welcome aboard
