First off thanks to Rick for posting the review here a few months back Otherwise ive have bought something nice sounding but not half as goodlooking. Whilst redecorating ive been relegated to using my girlfriend's sysyem First up the positives. Comfortable - much less pressure on the ears than the sennheisers. Look really cool - until you put them on! Come with a nice stand to leave them sat in. The akg701s have excellent detail at least as good as my senn HD580's but present everthing in a together kind of picture. They have the best soundstage ive heard in a pair of headphones. Musical - they just sound really musical in a way that I can't describe without thinking im writing bollocks. Its kind of you listening to the music whole rather than guitar + bass + drums + singer etc. Cable - they come with a nice chunky but flexible cable. Negatives so far having only had 1 proper headphone amp and 2 pairs of headphones I can't fault them for any thing that makes me think I'll be selling them straightaway. more to come once I reach 300 hrs. spot the deliberate mistake - never trust the opinion of somebody who can't even plug his headphones in ;D

you are one of the rare people who own a MK III ;D I come to late and must use a MK II But last days I ordered a AKG K 701 (before I read this) too and a new CD/SACD player - Marantz SA 7001 KI (KI signature version)

Those AKG headphone stands are so cool looking and such a smart design i wonder why no one ever thought of it before ? most go to some form of overpriced "hook" which is fine but no way worth the goofy prices they ask for a piece of wood that to be honest many looks butt ugly to me mostly or worse the type of "stand" that uses compression to hold the cans (heads, ball of wood, thick wood post etc..) because if there is a freakin' pad killer they qualify and then some when you leave them for a bit then when you go to use them the damn pads are all mashed up and you have to wait for them to 9hopefully) recover before using or you have no seal.............. I would blame STAX for that one because most are a "clone" of their headphone stand but when you think about it it works with THEIR headphones because of the nature of the design but like with most "copying" the clueless take a good idea then screw it up by using it wrong. AKG has it right because there is no actual pressure point, just a stand so very smart on the tech end, very good looking on the shelf, and you are correct also about the 701 being attractive.damn fine looking set of cans you got there (a statement that would get a face slapped if said to a hot female )

I've heard many people criticize the stand actually, though it is more to my liking. It's cheap, sure, but effective.
These headphones are gorgeous, though (when not on the head). Though very plasitc-y, they LOOK like an expensive pair of headphones. The sound is another thing altogether, though that's great, too.

plastic need not be ugly and is pretty much a given if you want light weight being less resonant than super thin metal would be plus not NEARLY as cold if you like to keep the thermostat low I also like the idea of a full size can knowing what it is leving those "tweeners" that don't know if they want to be portable headphones or home based cans for the kids who being young have no clue what they want so a ready made market for the hype machine. bottom line is i personally find the style very attractive and the base looks to me to be about the most purely functional one out there unless a person is one of those who is willing to pay big dollars for a hunk of wood just to be cool when sticking a GD nail in the wall or a C-clamp on the rack would do just as well as the overpriced aftermarket stuff. Best I have used ? The cheap ass POS "two level wire rack on a base" Radio Shack stands that went for $3 and that I wish I purchased 50 of before they discontinued the part but only for my non-grado cans.the Grados like to be layed flat so I use no stands for them

BTW-really not trying to start a war.already did than once at headfi when i asked a guy a simple "why" that rather than answer he chose to go nuts along with a bunch of other mebers who as is usual there would rather have "oooh thats cool" type answers to every damn picture posted rather than any criticism or any common sense. That the person WANTED but could not say why then went into melt down upon realising there really was no valid reason until i got the guy to admit PAGES later "just because" is still funny to me because all i was really fishing for was a simple "I want one because that is what I like" which is cool by me instead of the "how dare you ask that question" shit i got

that's some rig you got there mrarroyo!
Another thing I forgot to mention in my review was the 701s through a teac mini system cd player are sounding much better than the 580s through my usual marantz 17ki. Still some time to go before I can re-setup my main system as I'm in the process of cocking up every DIY job I can get my hands on ;D

Almost gives the impression of they being silver in color which I thought they were until I seen other pics around various forums.Personally I like the white look, have even contemplated making an amp that color just to have that shade in my system.........

my wife likes it and does not give me hell like she did with my previous banana hanger. That sounds quite vulgar...... "banana hanger"

actually it sounds painful as hell depending on which end is being 'hung" but when talking about headphones ?
works like a charm as long as you match hanger base weight to headphones weight so it isn't "tippy"

southpaw, thanks for your info, mine are on their way to me now Looking at that stock AKG stand I'm having a hard time seeing that they would easily and/or even halfway securely stand there, its not a balance act to get them to stay is it? mrarroyo, maybe you will know this answer. when I seen that very stand that you have on the site I thought "spraypainted pvc pipe and wood", is that what it is as far as you can tell? or some different pipe? reason I ask is I know my way around a wood shop and could easily make my own. Id guess the maker is raking in TONS of cash selling these. I'm curious what differences I will hear between the akg 701 and the sen 650.

Yes the black sections are regular PVC pipe that have been painted black. interesting .... hummm . can you by chance tell how the two "pipes" are secured at the "T" ? maybe you'd be so kind as to send me measurments via PM? it seems a good weekend project that'll be very gratifying to my wallet my 701s should be here maybe the end of this week * fingers crossed*

I normally brush off burn-in concepts, but the K701's truly benefit from a few hundred hours on them. The sound really opens up as far as space and details go, especially in the vocals. The little bugger will be slightly sibilant at first, and the bass will be somewhat tight. It isn't my imagination that this improved greatly with time.

Abby - one of a few people who could probably still look good wearing a pair of K701s

southpaw: Just btw, nice secondary system! I've always been fond of Teac's Reference series mini components (bit of a pity they discontnued the 5xx models, though...), but haven't bought any yet... May I ask, how long you've had yours now - and how pleased you are?
Greetings from Munich!
