They arrived this morning and I haven't had a good chance to have a listen yet as I've been replacing the perished foam in the enclosures and messing about with pads. Surprise surprise the PX-100 pads are an absolutely perfect fit for them and very comfy on the ears. I don't know if it's worth getting the actual 414 pads when the PX-100 pads fit on so perfectly? I've briefly tried them through a number of amps (X-CAN V2 / V3, WNA MKll and HA-1 MKll) and the only one that really grabs them by the balls is the HFN-009 Headcase (designed by Tim De Paravicini circa 1983) I will give them a good audition later on and get back to this thread with my impressions. For the time being here are the pics of the refoamed HD-414: Original foam perished Driver capsule released from the enclosure (easy, just three barbed locks to release and out she pops) A closer look at the enclosure Driver capsule and enclosure New foam inserted into the enclosures (poached from HD-600 packaging) PX-100 pads fitted Another view of the pads And another Exercising on the HFN-009 powerhouse (voltage meister) Another view of HD-414 on the voltage meister

damn those look cool in a warped kinda way, something i gravitate to will comment more after work (which is likely YOUR bed time ) Yeh they're certainly different looking and I reckon extremely tweakable Rickster. I don't have the correct 414 pads for them yet (on their way) but with PX-100 pads and HFN-009 amp they are very nice and balanced sounding (a bit like the K-501) and I'm sure there's mileage to be had with the detachable enclosures and "foam" press these babies onto your ears a bit and the bass increases, back them off a bit and it decreases slightly..... they're tweakable I tell ya! Just firing some juice into them as I believe they've been sitting in a cupboard for 20 years + one thing I can say so far...... COMFY! The world's first open-aire headphone, a piece of headphone history is sitting on my head as I type this 2000 ohm impedance! yes 2K!! yeeeehaw!

Hit those puppies with a proper 20W amp and get ready to be amazed.I owned a pair of the originals way back in the dark ages and yes, comfy bastards. Somehow the foamies got mangled,a thing that was disastrous pre-internet,and they got lost in the shuffle never to materialize again in my lifetime (more like someone finding them, saying "what is this junk ?" then gunning them into the garbage ) Seen this before ?

I lie. These are the 600 ohm versions, not the 2000ohm ones so a 20 watt amp will not be necessary on this occasion Sounding VERY good just waiting for the official pads to arrive.

I am not surprised the HFN is the only amp that drives them.even a 600 ohm load is a tough load and was reserved for studio use back in the day which along with the AKG 600 ohms cans were fully meant to be driven in the recording studio from a monitor amp of around 20-60 watts !
The designer of the HFN amp is also from the pro arena so knew what he was doing when designing the amp and what the end use would likely be-studio recording monitors
